I was wondering if your doctors prescribe oral antibiotics. What antibiotics? In what cases? And how often?

My husband is constantly on antibiotics for 3 years already (since he was diagnosed). Zithromax (500g 3 times per week) or Flucloxalin (1 tablet every day 500g).
His condition wasn't bad all these three years but I'm really worried of what it could cause - taking antibiotics for such a long time....

I probably take a course of antibiotics 2-3 times a year. At least 50% of the time it's due to a sinus infection. The rest of the time it's lung related. What I take depends on what I'm culturing, because I often switch between Staph and PA. So, it's usually Augmentin or Cipro. It usually does make me feel better than baseline, and then my cough comes right back after I finish the antibiotics.

In April I did 10 days of levaquin, felt decent for about a week, two days of which I was still on the levaquin. Then i was worse than ever and put on another 14 days. I felt better i.e. no fever and lighter mucus, around day eight again. I've also had a pretty constant ache in one of my ankles the whole time I've been on this second course. Also, sore muscles from a week ago climbing that have not improved. Ive 4 days left of this course.
I fear if I stop the levaquin on only 2 days of no fever, I'll be sick again in the blink of an eye. I also fear the whole tendon issue. I'm leaning toward staying on it. My pulmo office would say stop it.

How many days of orals does it take you to feel an improvement? or How many good days do you like to have before the course is over.

Melissa I usually feel good after the first week! It also depends on the dose and your situation. Last summer i took 1500mg of Cipro for two weeks. It was a big dose but i didnt feel a huuuge difference and my cough kicked in soon. That happened for two reasons: My PA level was too high and i had to drink milk many times after taking Cipro (calcium counteracts Cipro) just my 2 cents.

Thanks, Vasiliki. That was my impression too of how things should be--better in a week or sometimes less.

I've been really careful about taking the pill hours away from vitamins, probiotics and even NAC, but that's a good thing to point out. I think the levaquin was chosen for me based on a best-guess from cultures a few weeks before, which did not show PA. The rationale being to save Cipro for when they're certain it's there. Who knows what's going on in there <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">. It takes force of will to not be frustrated at the unknowns and necessary guesswork.

I hope you get a nice long chunk of appetite and better cough.
