Hey Everyone,

I have a really bad cough right now. I am on an oral antibiotic (Cipro) and have been for the past month or so. It isn't helping at all and my cough is getting worse.. my question is What other antibiotics are out there for me to use? Like i know it depends on what bacteria an stuff I am carrying but for the past about 10 years my doctor has only prescribed either Cipro or Bactrum...like I am not sure if this is possible or not but i feel immune to these antibiotics..anyone have any ideas of meds i can suggest to my doctor?? I do not want to be hospitalized for IV antibiotics (unless I really really have to) because i was ther about 2 months ago so any help would be appreciated!!

In terms of oral antibiotics, cipro is just about all there is except nebulized TOBI.

if your cough is getting worse, it would be smart to get on IV's immediately to prevent further damage to your lungs. once damage is done to your lungs, you can't repair it.

CFers rarely die from being on IV's too much. But they do die from lung damage....

if your cough is getting worse, call your doctor and tell him about it and that you do not believe that the Cipro is working. It is possible to become resistant to antibiotics if they are used too often. Maybe he can prescribe something else or you can get a sputum culture done and find out exactly what you are growing and what medicines it is sensitive to. Hope you get feeling better.

there a bunch of other oral antibiotics.

For me sometimes when Cipro fails Levaquin can be a miracle and keep me off IVs. Doxycycline also works well on me.

All depends on what bacteria you culture and and what it is sensitive to

I'm allergic to cipro, but I have good luck with Levaquin. I'm also on Zithomax (azithromycin) 3x/week as a maintenance med. Usually a big hit of Levaquin (750mg a day) for a few weeks knocks out an infection.

i almost always just take cipro(unless it's real bad, then IVs). i also have a bad cough right now too. but this time my doc gave me cipro and cephalexin.

it seems to be working good, i'm feeling better after just 4 days on it.
