Oral Antibiotics

i almost always just take cipro(unless it's real bad, then IVs). i also have a bad cough right now too. but this time my doc gave me cipro and cephalexin.

it seems to be working good, i'm feeling better after just 4 days on it.

Hi there,

I hope you get to feeling better real soon. As others have stated at this point it would be best if they had a sputum culture to know what you are growing and what it is sensitive to. I recently completed 4 weeks of Oral Levaquin followed by 5 weeks of IV meds followed by two weeks of oral levaquin 500 mg (3 days left).

It turned out that I had two infections one of which was resistant to the Levaquin (which is why I did not initially get better on 4 weeks of oral Levaquin) and which apparently was the primary culprit of my being ill.

In the past I have also had good experiences with the Antibiotic Avelox.

Good Luck to you

Hi Karen

THey definately need a culture to know if your bacteria are resistant to the drugs you always take. They should not rx the same one all the time as that raises risk of bacteria becoming resistant, they should rotate them and if you have become resistant to cipro they should stop rx it for a year or so then see if your culture comes back sensitve as sometimes that can happen and re-open that drug for use. There are lots of orals out there depending on what bacteria you culture. Levaquin as mentioned is another very effective one for gram negative bacteria. Even once you have become resistant to orals they can put you on two at once to get a synergistic effect and often times this will work (if you are not too sick) as to put it simply it 'confuses the bacteria'.

To treat or not treat a lung infection is a bit like a tight rope balancing act as to when to do it or not but if you have been coughing a month you probably need a 'tune-up'. Take care and hpe you feel better.

just remember - levo and cipro are in the same class.

if you're resistant to one in the class, you're resistant to the whole class

That isn't always true. I was resistant to Cipro when I was younger but I was still sensitive to Levaquin and was prescribed Levaquin for several years until I developed an allergy to it.

I am now sensitive to Cipro as well - I have had periods of resistance to Cipro over the years - they normally only lasted about 1 yr maximum and then I would culture a sensitivity to Cipro again.

Take Care and hope you are feeling better soon,
Lindsey

There are a lot of oral antibiotics out there. And like Nicole said taking two together is better than just taking one by itself. Not only do they work synergistically, it also makes resistance to one or the other much less likely. I am on a rotating schedule of 3 at a time every 2 - 3 weeks for my cepacia. If you have been on Cipro a month now, and still arent seeing improvement with your symptoms, you def. need a change of orals or an iv. Either way, make sure you call your doctor as soon as you can, you dont want to let things get out of hand . I hope you feel better soon

hey everyone,
Thanks so much for taking time to reply, I get cultures every week so my doc does know what I am growing but she keeps prescribing the same thing, I have switched to my adult doctor though so I am making an apt with him and see what he thinks, I am also going to ask about levaquin, everyone seems to have used it and I haven't even heard of it and my brother hasn't used it either.
Well SPANKS!!

hey hey
I have tried cipro and septrin (which is bactrim but in the UK format). The best they do for me now is keep me at an even keel for a couple of weeks if i really need to put off IV's. but if they were by themselves they wouldn't even do that. My clinic here synergises the action of those antibiotics with rifampicin (actually a TB antiobiotic) and that helps a little....it's still IV's in the end though. Also cultures aren't an exact science, you can be resistant on paper but the antiobiotics work and vice versa, but they are a guide. Think of it this way, a culture dish is an entirely different environment to your lung - things are going to behave differently. Oh and even nebulised TOBI (which i'm on continuously anyway) doesn't do it for me - i need the pure blood/drug goodness! hehe. Good luck, but if your cough is that bad and you've left it for a month and a half i can't see anything other than iv's doing anything. (but everyone is different of course)
