Oral thrush?

I developed thrush the day after a clinic visit and it has been coming and going for weeks now. I think DH and I are passing it back and forth but I do think it originated with me. Is this something I could have picked up while doing PFT's? I thought the mouthpieces were sterile/single use. The only other changes I've had is switching from Albuterol to Xopenex. I don't use corticosteroids or antibiotics. I feel good and haven't been sick. Are there any over the counter remedies for this?

That is so funny you posted this, because I was thinking about posting on thrush.

Just let me tell you--call your doctor right away to get a rinse. I developed thrush about 2 and 1/2 weeks ago and thought I could treat it with yogurt. Well, my cheeks and tongue was starting to look better but by about Monday of this week I began to have very painful swallowing and have the feeling like there was a knife in my esophagus. I assumed it was my acid reflux.

Well, I had a regular doctor's appt. on Thurs. and told the doctor about my "reflux" problem and that I thought I had an ulcer. When she looked in my throat she said it was covered with white patches and said now I have candidas esophagitis that has to be treated with the pill Fluconozole or a similar anti-fungal which can cause liver problems.

If I had treated it earlier, I could have just used a mouth rinse she said. Save yourself this experience, and just have your doctor call in a rinse. I am still unable to eat or drink anything that is not bland and thoroughly chewed up. I am down to 102 lbs because of this and my doctor is not very happy that I did not call when it first started.

Hope this helps! Ginger

I wouldnt wait. When I get oral thrush I dont want to eat or drink & I dont realize it until its caused a problem....

BTW our clinic uses disposable mouth pieces for PFTs so no worry of contamination from mouth to mouth there....

My Dr. gave me Mycelex lozenges when i got oral thrush years ago. Beings you are not on antibiotics, or oral steroids and mentioned the only change was from Albuterol to Xopenex....could it be the Xopenex? I have never used that before but maybe you should read the info sheet on it and see if thats a common problem with it. Maybe you need to rinse your mouth each time you use it ?
