Is there a high proportion of dalmations that have hearing problems? I seem to remember reading this, maybe a reason as to why they are a 'boistrous' breed.

Dyza,

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Is there a high proportion of dalmations that have hearing problems? I seem to remember reading this, maybe a reason as to why they are a 'boistrous' breed</end quote></div>

10-12% of the breed are born deaf.

Reputable breeders get their Puppies BAEF tested (accurately at 6 weeks) and puppies found to be deaf are humanely Euthanized

Dalmatians are not a breed for Novice dog owners...

Mankind is a harsh species.

I think it's do with the long term "protection" of those animals. How many animals end up in the pound?, how many people would take the time with a deaf dog?...it is a harsh reality sometimes someone has to make a judgement call for the welfare of the animals..long term. If those animals breed, you're only perpetuating the problem and contributing to the potential for many more animals being neglected, possibly abused and euthanized as an adult, or near adult animal.

Decisions like that are made every day, by breeders for many types of animals and farmers etc.

I got my dog neutered BECAUSE of her hip dysplacia...for the same reasons.

Its funny how deafness affects different breeds in different ways-
Most boxers that are born white go deaf when they are older, but this doesn't seem to affect boxers of any other color.
Must be some kind of genetic trait.
