Just wondering about ideas for drinks for children with this arsenic issue in juice. My daughter drinks alot of juice. I know it's not great for kids to drink alot of juice but with CF'ers needing to stay hydrated this is something my daughter does. She also drinks prune juice; anyone know if this has alot of arsenic in it?<br>I was going to the store tomorrow; thinking maybe sparkling water may be a good option? The problem is at school she does not drink her water bottle. She'll drink a juice box, gatorade, and milk though. But I'm feeling uneasy about all the info about juice in the news, that's all she needs is cancer from drinking juice.

I believe the news on tv referred to apple and grape juice -- that different juices were also tested and those were the two that stood out and the reason the grape juice was included was because a lot of times apple juice is mixed in with grape juice. Does she like those Ensure Enlive Juice Boxes? They come in Apple and Mixed Berry and taste just like juice, but have no juice in them.

I think sparkling water is wonderful. It is cheap, has no sugar or preservatives and some brands even have a little tiny bit of salt. I am not sure why I prefer it to tap water but I do and when I am feeling nauseous it doesn't make me feel worse. We don't, to my knowledge, have the same problems here with juice contamination however I try not to drink too much because of the refined sugars in reconstituted juice. I often use sparkling water (2/3) to dilute juice as well. Hydration is just so important but it gets tough to keep it interesting some days!

Good luck!

I think I will get the sparkling water. I think I will try mixing it with juice; to keep things interesting.

Liza, we do have those Enlive juice boxes and my daughter does like them; but her weight is good right now and she does't need to drink those right now.

Are there any juices that do not have arsenic in them?

Rebjane, it would prob be a good idea to switch her off of so much juice if you can. It has a tremendous amount of sugar in it which depresses the immune system (specifically, the WBC's I think) as well as a lot of other deleterious effects. We transitioned our kids off of regular juice onto a 25% juice/75% water mix. It takes time and patience, and always having your own stock with you, but I think its worth it. Just a thought. Milk is also a great substitute. Although I dont think there are really any studies out there to back this up, many people with CF have found that cows milk causes increased congestion (myself included). So I drink loads of almond milk, which is very high in Ca. Soy or rice milk, as long as they are the high Ca and high calorie, would be good. Another juice option is the capri sun roaring waters juice boxes, they are much lower in sugar and you still get the hydration factor, and they are very easy to carry around.

Just did some browsing on the internet for info on arsenic and juice. It looks like the arseninc is coming from juices imported from China and perhaps other countries that do not have arsenic banned.
If you buy juice that is from apples grown in the USA, then I believe we are fine. I purchase my apple juice for the boys supplemental drinks at costco...the brand is TREE TOP and it says it containes 100% USA apples.

blessings,
missa

DS doesn't like sparkling water; however, when he got sick this fall with a stomach bug, he started drinking soda. Before that he didn't like the carbonation. He doesn't drink much of it. Usually only at the movies or if his stomach is upset. I have a Soda Stream machine that I use to make sparkling water for myself and the soda syrups that come with it are fairly low in sugar. Actually if DS requests I make him some, I don't tell him it's actually diet.
