OTC Cough Meds

Ok so im battling a really bad cough from everything...can anyone give me good suggestions for a temporary OTC cough medicine? I've never taken one before (always was told to stay away from them) but now im in need. Thanks!!!

I like guaifenisen. It's an expectorant. I generally the off-brand one called Mucus Relief, available at Kmart for lots less than the cost of Mucinex.

Just make sure you get enough fluids and salt/electrolytes. You need extra when taking an expectorant.

I use regular robitussin cough suppressant. I know they say "no!", but sometimes sleep is more important than clearance.

I've always wondered why they don't tell us to use expectorants.

Actually the best cough medicine that really works well happens to be a natural one: Ginger Tea. You grate 1/2 inch of freshly grated ginger root to one cup of water, boil, then steep for ten minutes. You can use a tea ball or after it boils just use a strainer. Add honey for taste. I make it in a large glass measuring cup in the microwave and drink it all day.

If you are having hemoptysis, you shouldn't take this. Instead take Japanese Green Tea with some honey.

My doctor says that Ginger Tea is better than any cough medicine on the market. It's also a natural antiflamatory and has antibacterial properties.
