Caitlin, whenever I was hospitalized and on heavy doses of abx, I always had extremely loose stools. Ever since I have stopped all abx, I only had loose stools when I had a week long bug, but since they were formed. Ultrase never worked for me, but different strokes for different folks I guess. In these past few weeks that I have consumed massive amounts of fiber, my stools have been frequent, but not bad frequent. You want to have a BM after every meal. It's not ideal to have food sit in your GI tract, that's a key reason that exercise is fundamental. think about it, when a dog goes out and moves around, it usually has no problem eliminating waste. I know my mother that is wheelchair bound, is lucky if she has a BM every other day. That proves if you're static and basically motionless that you will amass the toxic filth and collect it in your gut; you need to excrete it to remain healthy; being motionless breeds disease.
Me personally, I would not buy any OTC laxative because you are not constipated. That will only open the flood gates and make you go more frequently, and you will have loose stools, you do not want that. You said you have no problem going, it's just painful. I don't know how painful it is, as pain is totally subjective. I can't answer whether we develop a resistance to enzymes, but I suppose developing a resistance to any medication is possible. But as for your pain, if I were you I'd eat crazy amounts of fiber, and when you sit down to eliminate waste, it should flow out without forcing the issue. But as Michelle has mentioned, bananas are a good source of fiber, I think they have like 2 or 3 grams of fiber per 1. If you do eat alot of fiber, it takes a few days for your stomach to get accustomed to the sudden change, but after that it is smooth sailing.
