Out of H. Saline

Anyone know where else I can get H. Saline? Cf pharmacy is backordered till next week. It was supposed to be in this week so I'm not sure it will even be in next week. You know how it is w/ backorders. The cf pharm. is supposed to be improving the kit and making it easier to measure, which is good news. Anyway I've used it about a month and have run out.

I go through Foundation Care in Missouri. Phone number is
877-291-1122. It is already mixed at 7%. It is costly, $90 for one month supply or $150 for two month supply.
I just looked at CF Pharamacy...I guess foundation care is less expensive. I would try them. I got my medicine in 24 hours and I am in Maine. They don't charge for shipping either.

Thanks,

However, I haven't been able to use the 7 percent as it is to irratative. I've been mixing it at 4 or 5 percent.

I was recently put on the HS it but was only able to get the 3% because the 10% was backordered. After waiting a month for the 10% to come in, and still being delayed, the pharmacist recommended I try going to a compounding pharmacist who can make the exact 7% sterile HS needed for the treatments. He found one for me that was 8 miles away although many compounding pharmacists will also mail your order. I pay $75 for a one month supply and since they make it right in the pharmacy, with special sterile equipment, there is never a chance that it will not be available. Here is a web link where you can find the closest one to where you live.

Good luck!

The pharmacy I'm using for HS is IV League. They have some premixed ones that they've made, but said there is a nation wide shortage. Apparently it's been addressed and hopefully it won't conitnue to be a problem for much longer.

A nation wide shortage on salt water...
It's amazing the wheels of this system don't fall off more often with issues like this arising.

Hi,

I get my Hypertonic saline at the CVS pharmacy. I don't know where you live or if they have CVS by you, anyway, they ordered it and it was in a day.

I just get it through a local pharmacy as well, but mine isn't that expensive!!!!! Mine is only $25 for a month supply. Just find a pharmacy that has compounding pharmacists.

I want to know the right mixture and components to use to make my own. I figure double distilled water is as close to sterile as you can get, and then I need to know what type of salt to add and in what amount. Screw paying that much for basically sterile salt water.

Isn't it great? Whats better is that people are paying up to 90 bucks a month for sterile salt water. As I said in my previous post, you could get cheap double distilled water, and just find out what type of salt (always cheap) and to what ratio to add it to the water. I'll be damned if i'm going to pay what they want for the stuff.

You cannot make HS in your home. You need specialized sterile equipment and knowledge on proceedures or else you will do yourself more harm than good. Any little bacteria getting in the solution could cause harm if inhaled into our cf lungs. A compounding specialist has the knowledge and sterile equipment to do the job properly.

Hi Amy,

Yep, I've started to dispense the saline directly using the measures on the side of the ampoules. I mix approximately 1.7 ml of 3% with 2.3 ml of 10%, which yields 4 ml of 7%, eliminating the need to get rid of the extra ml you get when you mix 2 ml of 3% with 3 ml of 10%. I've checked the volumes I get by eyeballing and they're pretty close to what I get with the syringe.

I've also recently found out that Dey, the company that provides the saline to the CF Pharmacy, makes 3-ml ampoules of 9% saline. One of those mixed with 1 ml of normal (0.9%) saline would also yield a 7% solution, with considerably less fuss and waste than we've got now. I'm trying to reach the medical director at the CF Foundation to see about switching to this option.

I don't think it is worth paying extra to get someone to mix 7% for you. Just get an order of 10% and an order of 3% or .9%(normal) and mix some of each in your neb cup to get aprox 7% or less. I get each for a generic copay of 10 each and it lasts about 2 months. My 10% comes in 15mL vials and I do as Amy suggests and use the markers on the side of the vial to guide me. The pari neb cup also has some markers, 6 and 8ml I believe. If you put 1 3mL vial of 3% into your neb cup and then just fill with 10% up to the 6ml line you have 6.5% so just squeeze a few more drops to get closer to 7%.
