overweight with CF

Hi everyone,

I know many/most people with CF have a problem gaining weight, but there has to be other CFers in the same boat as me.

I am pancreatic insufficient and I always had a hard time gaining weight when I was a kid/teen, but now I seem to have a problem losing weight. Before I got pregnant, I was at a stable weight (although slightly overweight) and had been there for many years. Since giving birth last August, I have gained about 7 lbs on top of my normal weight, putting me at a BMI of 29. None of my CF doctors seem to be concerned, but I can really tell that I've gained those extra pounds. I think it partly has to do with inactivity during the winter months. I feel like a lazy bum!

I'm just so used to eating whatever I want, whenever I want. I've always lived that way and it's hard to break that habit.

Is there anyone else who has a problem with gaining too much weight? If so, is your CF doctor concerned about it?

I def. am a patient on the chubbier side!! I used to hate it, but now am seeing that its probably more of a blessing that I can gain this weight. I actually have lost some which has helped me breath better and have more energy. I've never been like horribly over weight but I'm 5'3 and about a year ago I was pushin 155lbs. I'm now more around 135-140 which for my size is still over weight but....whatever! lol =)

I'm with you though on the eating habits! I was gangly and skinny when I was younger and as I've gotten older I all the sudden have this weight! And I want to keep eating whatever, whenever! They always told me I'd never half to worry about getting fat. So when it came to my dr. visits and I'd bring up the subject of my weight they never said oh ya we need to do something about that. I think they were afraid that if I did start to loose that I would take it to far. ANd they would be like "why do you want to loose the weight?" "uh...cuz I'm fat and tired" and they always would come back with "Your fine...blah blah blah..." So come to find out when Julie sent me my med. records to start disability, my charts read that i was an over weight CF Patient!!! THOSE LYING DOGS!! lol

So anyways thats all I got on that! Oh and I'm also not pancreatic insufficient as of yet. I have funky low sugars at times but so far I'm not needing any drastic measures with insulin.
So embrace this weight gain!! You may need the extra cushion later on with an exacerbation. =) (I can justify anything...)

I am a 27 year old, mother/cfer who is overweight. Yes my cf docs are concerned. But they have told me that its better to be a little overweight with cf than underweight. They told me that I should just exercise whenever I can, and eat as healthy as I can. I am on about a 1500-2000 cal. diet. I have to be careful or else I will gain weight. My docs say that having a little reserve for the infections to fight will decrease some of the damage it can do the body without the weight. My docs tell me to do pretty much what others do, watch what I eat and exercise and all that good stuff. there are more and more of us overweigh cfers out there than we know. Im still finding more and more of us. Anyway, have a good day. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
