oxygen question -

Hello my friends. For those of you like me who wear or have worn nose canules 24 hours a day do you have any suggestions for the following.

1. bloody noses: yuck, grose, I have never had a problem with this until I constantly started wearing O2 and using higher concentrations. I hate them... I know lubricant helps but was told Vaseline was a hazard. who knew?

2. cold nose: ok, so with the cold weather, the O2 seems to be freezing as well, making the inside of my nose freezing. My nose seems cold (in and out) when I am outside or in cold environments and it runs constantly. Uggh!

3. uncomfortable nose canules: ok, some are more comfortable than others, at time I need to just take it off and take a break. Any suggestions?

4. Boogies: ok, never before have I produced so much nasty snot. But it doesn't always come out. I blow my nose every couple of hours and still feel congested. The best thing I've noticed so far has been saline nose flooding.

Thanks for all your helpful advise for those of us who have been through nasally nose nastiness ; )

Trizzanne,
I guess your question was too gross to get a reply Just kidding. I'm afraid I can't be too much help, but I will try. There is a place on your O2 concentrator to humidify your O2. You can ask your O2 company about it. I didn't much like using it because I was paranoid about germs. You might ask about it though. Maybe a humidifier in the room would help. I have a humidifier that uses a black light to kill all germs so it is very safe to use.

Sorry I couldn't be more help! You are in my prayers though. I think of you and your baby often. If you get a chance, please read my praise report in the prayer request section. It will bless you. The Lord can change everything in an instant He is a waymaker where there seems to be no way

As for the nose bleeds. There are a few things you can try.

One is the humidifier as mentioned above. I actually used this for a time before my transplant and it did help a little. Key word a LITTLE.

Also you can talk to your doc about Ponaris - which is a nasal gel/lubricant. It is reccomended for O2 wearing patients I think. As for the way it works I do not know because I chose not to use it because it has iodine and I am allergic to shrimp.

I will also reccomend AYR - Saline Spray GEL. It is a combination of a regular saline spray and the gel. You can spray it like a spray BUT it doesn't give that horrible post nasal drip thing or the runny sniffly nose thing after you use it since it is thicker like a gel. I did use this and loved it. I still have some for days when my nose is extra dry.

As for the canulas - I sometimes cut the tips off the parts that stuck in my nose. I trimmed them down a bit. Not flush with the tubing but just a small amount. Also you can ask them if they have pediatric nasal canulas. The nostril parts are not so long with the pediatric tubing so it isn't SO invasive lol.

As for the nose boogies. I know what you mean and I say this. Sinus rinses. I had this issue before I had my transplant and never did the sinus rinses cause I just didn't think much of them - I mean seriously how good could the be right - wrong. I do them now to help keep my lungs clear of the bacteria I have in my sinuses. They are amazing. They help keep my nose clear and prevent alot of the runny nose thing I got before. They are great for allergies too and have helped keep my cultures clear.

I am sorry I can't help with the cold issue so much, but to say maybe cover your mouth and nose with a mask. Unfortunately (or fortunately) here in FL we don't have too much of the cold weather, so it wasn't a real issue for me.

Best of Luck,
Linds

Sorry didn't see this when you first posted.

The cannula question. Sometimes adults use the pediatric cannulas so everything is smaller. Sofhose is the softest cannula ( see http://www.softhose.com/ ).
In the cold try one of those knitted cowl things that go down on your neck or up over your mouth and nose (can't think what they're really called). Don't know what kind of O2 you use but if it is compressed then you can keep it in a insulated pack because it doesn't need to vent. Of course, liquid O2 (like Helios) needs to vent but as long as you have the vents uncovered the rest of it can be in something.

Some folks (even those who don't really need glasses) use the Oxyview glasses rather than a traditional nose cannula for comfort and vanity (see http://www.oxyview.com/ ). I wouldn't think they would be warmer, tho.

Run the O2 line under your clothes (and next to your body) instead of over them (especially under coat). Put the thing under your hair instead of under your chin and then the cannula can go down your back. Jackets work better than long coats for this.

You've already figured out the saline thing. And Ayr is good for hurting noses.
