I am confused as to why he cultured P.A in November told this at Decembers visit. We took another culture and started Tobi 4 weeks 2x daily. We just got home yesterday and I asked if we would Tobi even if he cultures clean of P.A . He did culture clean in December. I said how we hadnt done any Tobi. I had to tell him about the P.A we had a diffrent doc for the first time ever at clinis Dr Ohagan. I do know him from December 05 when Damien had a phemoniathrax. He was the one who explained the ventalatior to me and was in the I.C U when Damien was there any way I like him and so does Damien. Wouldnt you think that would the topic at hand, the P.A? I had to mention it. He said well take another culture and I cant answer that yet. About the Tobi treatmeants that is. I am curious can you culture P.A and without treatment the very next month culture clean? I feel somthing isnt right here. Why didnt he even broach the P.A ? All in all it was a good clinic visit and his lungs are clear gaining weight and he told me I was doing a good job and it made feel great!

It is possible that patients have PA in a certain area of the lungs & unless you get a sample from there each & every time the results might have vary.

Sometimes it's hard to get a good culture, good juicy sample of something. With the little guys it's basically a throat culture.

100% correct. Just because you don't culture it doens't mean it's not there.

Sputum/Throat cultures are not, by an stretch of the imagination, 100% accurate

At our clinic, we kind of go by the 'rule' that IF after 4 cultures something doesn't show up, then MAYBE it is gone. But even then, I still know that it could be 'hiding' somewhere.
My daughter has had one clear PA culture, after doing two rounds of Tobi and Cipro, but I only celebrated the fact that she wouldn't have to do another round of Tobi with her, because I will not feel any relief about the PA being gone until we get many more clear cultures.
The same with the MRSA that my daughters culture. We finally had a clear culture last month after a few years of culturing it. But until I see a few more clear cultures, I am not going to get too excited.

Do you request copies of your son's culture reports? I have found that it really helps me keep up with what is going on and what meds will possibly work when there is a flare up. I always call about 4-5 days after our clinic appt to get the results of the culture, and then I ask for them to send me a copy in the mail. I like to see for myself it is showing 'few, moderate or abundant' mrsa, staph, pa, whatever the case may be.

By the way, do you know if Dr. O'Hagen used to be at St. Louis Childrens Hospital-like maybe 7-8 years ago?

My son cultured positive for PA in Dec 05 (they said it was a very small amount) and then Cultured neg for PA in Jan 06 (before we started TOBI). Our doctor still put him on the 6 month (28 days on, 28 off) round of TOBI. My son was 4 at the time and he said that it is not always easy to get a good culture on the little ones. He said that could be the reason for the positive then negative culture. He said there are many other reasons, one of them being that my son could have just eaten something with PA on it (it is everywhere) such as fruit and the culture picked that up.
