Hi John,

If a culture shows that your bseudomonas is sensitive, then the drug will work on that bug. So so switching to another inhaled bug won't make a difference. What does your culture show in terms of what your sensitivities are?

Sometimes inhaled antibiotics don't work because of an asthma component or a mucus plug, so the drug can't get into the airways deep enough, particularly if this is happening at the bottom of your lungs. If this is the case, are you sensitive to oral drugs like Cipro, etc.

The other possibility is that although you culture pseudomonas, it has colonized and is not causing an infection at all. And instead it is inflammation that is causing you to feel sick. And you can feel just as sick from inflammation, so then you would have to treating the inflammation -- which you should be doing anyway. And untreated, inflammation can lead to infection.

Is your white count high, showing infection? Just may be another clue.

So when you say you have encountered resistance, what does that mean? In a culture? Because if the bugs are sensitive and is what is causing an infection (if you have an infection), and you don't have airways blockage, the meds would work within 28 days.

Thanks for your reply. I've used tobra IV and Zosyn, also Cefepime. Can't do Cipro or any of the quinolones--Levaquin blew out my Achilles tendon back in 03..

John,

This is a great forum and you should find a lot of wonderful info here. I also want to point you to a forum called Bronchiectasis R'US. I visit both regularly.

There are plenty of people there who culture pseudo, and here is a very long thread on PA in the "Bugs you may grow" section. At least one man, "Racey14" also blew his Achilles tendon with a quinolone, Cipro.

Come on over an introduce yourself :)

P.S. What kills the bacteria in the petri dish does not always work in my lungs...don't know why. I think my sputum sample is showing an incomplete picture of the bacteria population.

HI John! I too battle with pseudomonas. One of my strains is resistant to every drug but Colistin. On the other hand, after doing a four week session of three different i.v.s (tobramycin, imipenem, and aztreonam) I did start to feel better even though the cultures said my PA was resistant to all of them. The three together were able to knock it down some.

I strongly suggest you ask your doctor to send your culture to a synergy lab. It can see which combination of drugs might kill your PA. And even if you show resistance to a lot of drugs just know that there is always hope in using these combinations. Good luck with everything and let us know if you need any more help. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Ginger
