Pain Doctor?

Does anyone see a pain specialist for any reason? I'm kind of having the last straw here. I've had hip pain for the better part of 6ish years, and it's not getting better, instead it's getting worse. The docs haven't been able to figure out what it is, and I take vicodin when the pain is really bad. Now even that isn't cutting it (probably partly due to tolerance).

Just because I know you guys are helpful and will suggest things it could be.. it is *not* fibromalaygia, avascular necrosis, arthritis, bursitis, a sprain, a break, or anything that shows up on xray, CT, dexa or MRI. I was shown to have osteopenia but that's it. So now I'm asking if you guys have any experience with a pain doctor because this is getting ridiculous, and I've made my peace with never knowing wth is wrong, I just want it to stop hurting.

Thanks <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

How is your muscle mass? More specifically, how is your muscle mass in your thighs? I know that when muscle mass is decreased, people tend to use the joints for support when walking.. therefore, making them sore. Do you exercise? If not, maybe starting some physical therapy to build up your muscles would be a good idea.

Have you seen a rheumotologist? That may be the way to go before heading to a pain doc. If you have seen one, and they are the one's who have ruled out all of the diagnoses you mentioned... then yeah, I guess a pain doc would be a good idea
.

I know how awful joint pain can be. I had CF-arthritis pre-tx, and then had to deal with joint pain for about 6 months last year that was almost debilitating. I went to an acupuncturist and she told me to stop all artificial sweeteners, and after a month, it went away. I was having a lot of hip pain at that time. If you can afford an acupuncturist.. I highly recommend them.

I hope you find the answer.. wherever you have to go for it.

I have quite a bit of pain in my joints too..I think that Christy has a good suggestion, see a rheumatologist if you haven't already so that they can run tests to see if you have arthritis or any other disorder that might be causing your pain. I have recently tested positive for RA (not a high RA titer but high enough) after being negative for years...so it is worth a shot to be tested even if you have been tested in the past. As far as seeing a pain doc, I have seen one in the past for chronic pain...I am now being controlled by FEntanyl and percocet along with NSAID's for my joint and chest pain. Oh, another thing...are you really flexible..I mean, can you dislocate/sublux your joints easily? If you can, you can have painful joints due to the lax ligaments (that is what my doc told me). I have Ehlers Danlos III as well which is essentially benign joint hypermobility syndrome. My joints dislocate easily and my skin is also very elastic (I have strange stretch marks and can "pull" my skin a good 2 inches or so without any pain...this freaks people out whenever I do this). Anyhow, with this, comes pain in the joints frequently.
I hope that you find relief soon...pain sucks. I have suffered many nights of little to no sleep due to pain and can sympathize with you. If you have exhausted all diagnosis, then seeing a pain doc would not be a bad idea as pain control has been making progress. Hugs, Jenn

i actually love pain management. i went for acupuncture for pain in my neck and back. apparently its my "stress" muscle in my back that give me trouble. stress? lol i wonder where that comes from? you may want to look into your local pain management center for different options that they can offer. they usually offer all natural options. they stray from narcotics and things like that.
