Pain in lower back, what's wrong with me???

Hey Everyone,

Please let me know if this has happened to you or you can suggest anything. I woke up last night at about 12 am with severe lower back pain. I did not sleep more that 2 hours the whole night. When I got up the first thing I did was vomit. I called in sick to work and got into my general doc first thing. He said he thought it might be a virus (I was sick the week before) that settled in my kidneys or a bacterial infection. I am not bleeding and my urine is light yellow (not cloudy). He did a urine sample on me and said my proteins and white blood cell count were up a little, but I had no sugar in my urine (which is good). He gave me a shot of antibiotics and I had just started cipro last night right before the pain started, to combat my sinuses. Is there something he is missing? Could it be kidney stones or kidney failure? How do you know? He said if I didn't respond to the antibiotics within 24 hours to come back.

I asked him if taking zithro (MWF) while I take cipro (and 3 advil- since I never take pain killers) would have compromised something and he said no.

Any ideas on what this might be? How do you know if it's kidney failure? If it is, what will happen to me? Do you die right away? Sorry for the panic, I am just so worried. This has never happened before.

The first thing that came to my mind was something I went thru. I was very sick in 2005 & had bad, bad lower back pain. I couldnt walk, pee, lay in bed or move. No matter what I did it didnt help. It turned out that it was from a combo of dehydration & constipation. The dehydration got better with continuous iv's & the constipation needed intervention. I just thought I would mention it because it was such a debilitating pain that I thought something was seriously wrong.

Thanks for the reply Melissa. I don't think it has to do with my bowels. I have had loose bowels for over a week. I also have been nautious all day today. I forgot to say that. I have had SEVERAL bowel obstructions and partials and this is a totally different feeling. Gosh I hope it is nothing. Has anyone had kidney failure? If so, how was it discovered and treated (if that's possible)? I hope I am stressing over nothing.

Thanks for any response.

I have no idea what happens/what to expect with kidney failure.
But I had kidney stones once which reminds me of what you were discribing. Did the dr check your urine for blood? I think that's what they do when they suspect a kidney stone. I was lucky and passed my stone the same day, but the pain was sooooo bad I was vomiting and sweating.

Keep us posted.

Do you have a fever? That would go along with a kidney infection. I would recommend taking tylenol for the time being because advil can be hard on your kidneys. Cipro and zythro are both good for kidney infections. Also drink lots of water and cranberry juice to flush your kidneys. If the pain doesn't get better get an X-ray or CT scan, both can find kidney stones.

As far as kidney failure goes, it probably wouldn't hit you so fast. A couple signs of kidney failure are trouble urinating, constant itching, and fluid retention. If by some long shot your kidneys are failing you would be put on dialysis (sp??). But I seriously doubt that you are having kidney failure.

Sounds like kidney infection to me if the pain is more in your flank (side/back). I had a nasty one last year, had no pain, however woke up early morning vomiting and had bad fever, generally felt like crap - didn't suspect kidneys at all but that's what it was (no obvious cloudy or smelly urine either). Also had a kidney infection as a child and did have bad flank pain on this occasion. I doubt your kidney's are failing - didn't the doctor take bloods? I'm sure tests would have alerted him if your kidneys were in serious danger. Drink loads of water, no caffeine and keep your fever down with appropriate painkillers it should start to come right fairly quickly.

I AGREE W/ SALLY. IT SOUNDS LIKE KIDNEY STONES. I HAVE HAD 3 AND THE BACK PAIN IS QUITE SEVERE. I ALSO WORK IN A UROLOGY OFFICE AND THESE ARE ALL SYMPTOMS OF A STONE. SO IF THE PAIN DOES NOT GO AWAY YOU MAY NEED TO HAVE A STUDY TO SEE WHAT IS GOING ON. I HOPE ALL GOES WELL FOR YOU.
