i would think that because the pain is getting worse instead of better and it has moved some, i wouldn't think it would be a broken rib and more likely to be plurisy or something else

I would def say pleurisy, I had a similar situation last year. They gave me anti-inflammatory for a week or so. You could always try Motrin IB because it has the anti-infl, but it might not be enough for pain. I used very low doses of hydrocodone to fight the pain.

It sounds like pleuritic pain to me. I've had it quite a few times and when you mentioned a rubbing sensation ( called pleural rub) thats what makes me think Pleurisy. I usually take tylenol for the pain and i remember when i had to cough, i pushed in on the painful area and it made it less painful to cough.

Thank you all for the responses. I'm leaning towards pleurisy, and so is my doctor. It makes me a bit nervous to have much ibuprofen, due to not having hemoptysis for a looong time & not really wanting to start that up again. I wonder if Prednisone would do the same thing? Any thoughts?

From those of you that have had this before...it does go away, right??!! I suppose the amount of time you have it varies by patient?
