I've suffered with Chronic back, shoulder, and chest pain for around eight years or since I was about 12 years old. I was wondering if this was common or is it just me. And also if any one out there knows of any treatments that have helped or is pain medicine basicaly the only option I have. Because it's reached the point where its not really helping any more.

exercise and chiropractic have helped me. Coughing atrifies abdomenal muscles (at least the lower one's) then the lower back is left to do much of the work and this imbalance can cause continual pain.

Coughing can displace ribs and vertabrae causing sublexations in the spine.
Chiropractic can help keep everything in line and flexible.
Massage is also very beneficial.

Exercise strengthens muscles to help maintain proper alignment of our bones. As well as having many benefits for our lungs and cleansing of toxins throughout our body.

All that being said, there's something called CFRA (CF related arthritis) that I don't know anything about but you could be suffering from.

Also, random but are you making sure to have enough calcium?

I used a T.E.N.S machine for years to help manage pain prior to my transplant and even for the first year after my transplant....

I have chronic back and rib pain to. I have asked the docs what to do and they don't know. I use the heating pad alot and warm baths and pain meds. I wish I could go just a little while without hurting, it gets very frustrating and disappointing. I have noticed that the lower my PFT's are and if my weight is down, my pain is much more severe.

I am not sure how common it is, but it is certainly an issue with me, in fact I posted about chronic chest, back pain and am on Fentanyl patches with breakthrough painkillers. I am considering options such as perhaps the TENS that Freak advised as well as other things such as massage, heat doesn't do much for me..it is a very temporary fix for me. What did help a bit was Reiki, I was a skeptic at first but the hospital I was in last time offered that and I said anything to help. They came in and before I knew it, I was out....finally sleeping! What is really wierd is that their hands felt like heating pads, very very strange and soothing. I had them perform Healling touch or Reiki on me every day. I also am in the process of investigating why I am having such increased pain, thanks to all who have privately emailed me or responded to my thread...I promise to let you know what comes up!
Anyhow, I pray that you get relief, chronic pain really sucks! Hugs, Jenn <img src="i/expressions/rose.gif" border="0">

i've been active my whole life, so i'm never sure what injuries are sports-related or cf related... but i have had back pain, knee pain, and in my toes (????!) .. believe it or not, ibuprofen helps me a lot because it contains anti-inflammatories that relax the muscles.. & heating pads are great for backs.

I think chronic pain is more common than has been addressed. As to whether its actually CF related or "influenced" by CF might be more the ??. I have occaisional aches and pains that flare up with infection, BUT I also have constant pain that worsens with weather, inactivity, infections and lack of sleep. Most currently is a "frozen shoulder" problem. The muscles involved with this happen to be the same ones that trigger my airway problems. So as my therapist is having trouble getting additional approval for my therapy visits, I have my ups/downs because even the shoulder on its own is better. The over all progress is slow because when my CF isnt quite right it hinders my shoulder progress. The therapist knows about CF & completely understands how/why there is a connection, but they havent figured out how to include the CF with regard to the progress of my shoulder. ANYWAY my point is that I think its all mixed together at some point and if I cant get more therapy approved I dont know what I will do. I have been taking more ibuprofen that I would care to, but tylenol doesnt seem to work.
