Pain management in CF patients

I think chronic pain is more common than has been addressed. As to whether its actually CF related or "influenced" by CF might be more the ??. I have occaisional aches and pains that flare up with infection, BUT I also have constant pain that worsens with weather, inactivity, infections and lack of sleep. Most currently is a "frozen shoulder" problem. The muscles involved with this happen to be the same ones that trigger my airway problems. So as my therapist is having trouble getting additional approval for my therapy visits, I have my ups/downs because even the shoulder on its own is better. The over all progress is slow because when my CF isnt quite right it hinders my shoulder progress. The therapist knows about CF & completely understands how/why there is a connection, but they havent figured out how to include the CF with regard to the progress of my shoulder. ANYWAY my point is that I think its all mixed together at some point and if I cant get more therapy approved I dont know what I will do. I have been taking more ibuprofen that I would care to, but tylenol doesnt seem to work.

I had chronic back pain and then I finally decided to see a chiropractor, and seeing him on a regular basis left my back feeling great. I stopped seeing him (for insurance reasons) and now my back has started hurting again, so I'm on the look out for another chiropractor. I know it really helped me and some other people said it helped them, I would highly suggest seeing one for awhile and see if it helps you.

i also have a lot of aches and pains, and i'm sure my age has something to do with it, but i think the c/f plays the biggest role... when i get tired my upper and lower back tingle and ache. my lungs hurt hurt on and off, my ribs hurt sometimes from coughing and my muscles are pretty weak too... i'm going to look into acupunture, that reiki sounds pretty good too.... I've had lower back pain since my early 20's. I also developed arthritis in my late 30's. Ibuprofen helped, but recently I started Mobic (also and ani-inflamatory) - and it works better for me than the ibu's. I also have sleeping problems, which makes my back worse. Soaking in a bath helps for a bit. I use the chiropractor and massage for when it's really bad (like after a tune-up, laying on those crappy beds.) But all in all, it's the Mobic that has kept my pain at bay, for the most part.

I can't do pilates, it just aggrivates my back, as does other aerobic type stuff. I went to a yoga class a few times and really liked it. It was easy (as long as you don't force anything). I bought a tape but have still yet to use it.

Best wishes in finding relief, it sucks to be in pain everyday.

I have had some form of back pain since my mid teens. I suffered from lower lumbar strains in high school to the point that I couldn't even bend over at times. for me it is caused in part by tight hamstrings and tight upper back muscles from coughing and more strained and rapid breathing due to CF. The way the therapist and doc explained it to me is my hamstrings are tight and pull down on my lower back muscles and my upper back muscles are tight and pull up on my lower back muscles - therefore my lower back muscles are being strained because they are being pulled tightly in opposite directions. I did and do stretches for my hamstrings and that has helped my lower back muscles greatly.

I also get upper back, shoulder and neck pain pretty much all the time. It for me is partially posture related and partly breathing and coughing related. I tend to slouch because I am able to catch my breath easier in that position. When I cough I also strain those muscles over and over and they never really get a chance to rest.

The best thing for me has been a combination of physical therapy and massage therapy. I have had each twice and each time it has helped in different ways to alleviate pain.

I have never had to take prescribed pain meds for my pain I have been able to manage it with either ibuprofen, heat, stretching and therapy of sorts.

Take Care,
Lindsey
