Painful sweat test?

After seeing someone post about sweat tests being painful, I have to ask, has anyone had any problems with their children complaining that the sweat test was painful? DS cried during his sweat test. He chose to have his right arm tested first (he calls it his "strong arm"), which he said ouch over and over again during. When they did his left arm, he cried the entire 5 minutes the electrodes were on his arm, saying it hurt. They also weren't able to get much sweat from him, and his left arm was completely inconclusive. I was wondering if anyone knows if this may indicate that the test was done improperly or could be invalid? DS is getting ready to get a CT scan of his lungs and sinuses at which time we are going to discuss further CF testing. I'm going to request the Ambry genetic testing, but I'm worried they'll ask him to take another sweat test as well. I really don't want to put him through it again. Thanks.

My daughter was an infant when she was tested, so I don't know for sure, but she didn't cry and it sure didn't seem like it hurt her.

I'm so sorry that the test was a painful experience for him. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

All of my kids had the test done and none of them reported the test as being painful. Emily said it felt tingly, Shawn said it felt warm, Timothy just said he felt it 'there' (meaning, the stuff strapped onto his wrists. He didn't seem to feel the current or anything.) Emily especially has significant sensory issues and had no problems at all with even the 'tingly' sensation during either of her tests.

I do know that if they did not get enough sweat that the results may not be valid. I would push hard for the Ambry testing, making the point that the first test did not yield a sufficient sample and was a miserable experience for your son and Ambry testing will be more accurate than going for ANOTHER sweat test which would likely result in Ambry testing anyway.

Wishing you the best! <img src="i/expressions/rose.gif" border="0">

It does give a tingle like sensation. I remember because I was an adult when I had it. To a child that can be interpreted as painful.

I wouldn't put him through another sweat test because it is useless these days since they have much better ways of finding out.

Push for the Ambry, or Mayo clinic does the same testing. They did mine.

My son said that it hurt when they did it on the first arm, however he was completely distracted after we started playing UNO, so I don't think it actually hurt...I just don't think he liked the sensation.

I had a painful sweat test when I was 6 (I don't remember the earlier ones, got tested everytime my family moved because clinic thought my previous tests were wrong *rolls eyes*). I still remember it, 33 years later. I also had 2 red marks on my arm afterwards. My daughter also cried during her sweat test (negative, thankfully). Maybe it's just how sensitive your skin is? All tests were at accredited cf clinics.

When I had my sweat test done the right arm kind of stung but I was able to distract myself with talking to the person performing it. When they did the left arm, however, it hurt so bad I almost started crying. And no, the pain was not a "child interpreting tingly as painful" because I had the test done when I was 19.
