Pancreantitis

Hi everybody! Happy New Year! Makailyn was released from the hospital today after being admitted Sunday for pancreantitis. Her symtoms started Christmas morning when she woke up vomiting and it lasted ALL day. I took her to the ER and her blood work showed her white blood count was elevated to 19 but nothing else. They said she probably had a virus and gave her iv fluids and anti nausea medicine and sent her home Sat morning. The vomiting stopped but the stomach pain did not. I took her back to the ER Sunday and they ran more blood work. This time the white blood count was down but her amylase and lipase were super high so they admitted her. What I'm confused about is that they said it only happens in pancreatic sufficient people but just 3 mo ago they did a test that was supposed to be fool proof where they went down and stimulated the pancrease. It showed she was PI so she has been on enzymes since then. All the stool tests showed she was PS before that. Now they are saying she could be a little bit of both! And that nothing is fool proof like the GI said it was. UGGHHH! Why can't anything with CF be simple?!! Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks for your time!

I have no experience with this at all but just wanted to say sorry your lo is going through that. I hope everything calms down soon, and I don't think cf will ever be simple.

Was this the test that she had when she was admitted and had the pancreatic testing done? Secretin Stimulation Test

In any case, IMO: I would take the word of drs specializing in her condition after performing a controlled test over ER drs that may not be well-informed in a condition like CF. CF is a complex disease and medical staff that don't often deal with it often don't have the knowledge needed to really know the answers.

Elevated amylase and lipase can also be found in someone who has pancreatitis- which can occur in someone who is either PS or PI (it's rather common in those with CF.) Lipase test

I'm so sorry that she is going through so much and that the testing has been so confusing. I hope that she is feeling better soon and that you get some clear answers asap from her cf team.

oh no, I'm so sorry. We have been dealing with varying opinions on my daughter's pancreatic sufficiency. Her fecal fat was lower than "normal", but higher than "insufficient". So I can understand your frustration. I also worry about pancreatitis for Alyssa. I hope your daughter is feeling better and you get some answers.
