Pancreatic Sufficiency and Symptomatic Carrier

Okay, so some of you know that my SIL has been having some troubles with her stomach. She had an endoscopy yesterday which showed a hiatal hernia and some inflammtion in her stomach. They also took a biopsy of her stomach and small intestine to check for cancer and cealic's disease. I asked her more specifically about her issues and she is having digestive issues that are a lot like CF issues. She isn't able to gain weight (she lost 10 pounds and only weighed about 100 to begin with).

I have heard on here about symptomatic carriers. We know that she is a carrier (delta F508). How do they test for pancreatic sufficiency? Anyone have any other thoughts/ideas? She thinks that her doctor is going to diagnosis her with IBS if the biospies come back negative.

The PS test is a stool test. Pancreatic elastase or something like that. I don't know anything about symptomatic carriers but I'd say if there is any real concern she should have the Ambry full panel.

If she was pancreatic insufficient I have a feeling she wouldn't have lived this long. She would have been so vitamin deficient and would have been losing weight since young childhood.

Most CFers, before digestive enzymes existed, died just as frequently from lung issues and they did from malnutrition.

I would put for Ambry full panel too.....

Thanks for the replies. She has generally been healthy, but has just been sick for about 6 weeks, etc. Her problems right now are all stomach and digestion related, which of course in my world trigger thoughts of CF. This will probably sound like a dumb question, but with pancreatic sufficiency is a person always one way or the other? I guess I assumed (which I know that I should never do <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> ), that it might be like CFRD and you could "get it" as time goes on.

I know how frustrating it is to not know what is wrong with you, so that is why I thought that I would check with you guys, since you always have so much good information and it seems like someone here has been through just about everything!

I hate to even suggest to her that it could be CF and that she should get the Ambry panel done, especially with how anxious she has been about the whole situation.
