Pancrecarb

DH spoke with a relative this weekend who is a medical malpractice attorney. If there wasn't an alternative medication (zenpep or creon), then it would've been worth it to have some sort of suit filed; however, because of the two new meds albeit ones that may not be appropriate or work as well, wouldn't have had a legal leg to stand one.

<br />I did contact the FDA a week or so ago...

I sent out long emails to our senators. There is not an alternative to Pancrecarb right now. Our nutritionist was mentioning/looking into taking a bicarbonate with the alternative enzyme, though she was not sure what it would be or how to mimic Pancrecarb. I will talk to a pharmacist to see how they think we could do that. I also did find some Pancrecarb at our local pharmacy and they will hold it until I can fill it through our insurance. I will continue to call pharmacys around town. And Liza, the medical malpractice attorney had an interesting point. Sometimes I think our government can not wrap their heads around medial terms; but start throwing in legal terms and all of a sudden there is complete understanding.

We have had a very interesting last month with trying to find enzymes that worked for our daughter. i have called, wrote and done everything that I knew to do. We tried zenpep and it was AWFUL!!!! The doctors wanted her to stay on it for a two week trial. I finally pulled the plug after 8 days of severe cramping (couldn't walk at times), oil floating on each and every stool, and lots and lots of poo. She finally stopped eating by day 7. Put her back on pancrecarb and stools returned to normal with in 12 hours.

Very frustrating, called all around and have a supply again. The last three days we have been on creon. I told the nutritionalist to give us the best chance of success. I wasn't going to watch our daughter lay on the ground writhing in pain for days on end while we wait and watch to see if her body would adjust. Sooo... we have doubled the amount of prevacid in the am. and then give her a dose right before bed. She is also on one of the highest doses. (I hate that we are on the highest dose, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.) The other thing that I chose to do is get the lowest dose (meaning that we take a ton of pills) to ensure that there were enough beads to cover the digestion. I think the pancrecarb has several things that make it work for so many. One is definitely the sodium bicarbonate, the second the amount of beads present in each capsule. The zenpep's were like boulders vs. sand. The sand is going to definitely going to cover more surface area.

I don't know if our experience will help anyone, but I sure hope so. So far our daughter is hanging in there. Like I said it is only the 3rd day, but she seems to be doing okay. I will post later if things go south. Pm me if you have any other questions.
