I´m from Peru. Excuse me for my ignorance. I read about a little about enzymes. I some texts appears there are differentes and in other says there are the same.
Im on creon 25. It has a little protease and amylase.
I´m very confused about enzymes and units. Each brand has differentes units. One cant not compared because are in differents units.
This is the prospect of creon.

I heard about the enzymes who have pancrelipase. Many of them there arent approved by FDA. And many of them have been retired as Viokase. Could you help me please? There are many brand who have pancrelipase.
Thank you.

Lark.

Hi Lark - it's my understanding that enzymes are dosed according to lipase units primarily. Each company manufactures their enzymes differently than the next company. This is why some individuals have a better response with one brand than another brand. The FDA recently required more strict "rules"in making enzymes in general so patients could receive consistent dosing. Apparently, each enzyme could vary from the next even within the same brand. The number following the brand name corresponds to the number of lipase units. Not sure if this helps...

There are 3 brands that are approved for use now in the United States...

Creon (now Creon 6, 12 and 24 to replace the former 5, 10 and 20's.)
Zenpep (a new brand as of last year.)
Pancreaze (formerly Pancrease; same formulation just renamed.)

As of this time, Ultrase, Viokase and Pancrecarb are not available due to not gaining their FDA approval. It's not clear whether / when they will be available again.

All of these (both the approved and ones still not approved) are 'pancrelipase' products; porcine enzymes with varying proportions of lipase, amylase and and protease to help in absorption of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. The varying of formulations is a good thing, since people with CF differ so much and an enzyme that is good for one person won't work well for someone else. This is also why it's unfortunate that we only have half as many to choose from as we used to, since some people did great for many years on one that is no longer available and have really struggled since having to switch to something else.

I'm confused about units. <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cmp-trujillo.org.pe...uctos/32309.htm
">"><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cmp-trujillo.org.pe/plm2008/PLM/productos/32309.htm
<br ">http://www.cmp-trujill....pe.....s/32309.htm
</a></a>

I read that Units Ph Eur its similar in almost all enzymes as FIP but not USP. I think is very low my creon.
Did you try natural enzyme?
What about the time? I read in other messages that is recommended to take before one hour meals. And other message its recommended to take every hour.
Do you think creon has a little amount of protease?

We are recommended to give Emily her enzymes right as she starts eating, and if she eats again more than an hour later, we give her more. This is because there is a limited window of time they will be effective. Giving them to her an hour before she even starts eating would be useless: there is nothing to digest an hour before eating, and by the time an hour passes, they will not work as they should.

Emily has been taking Creon for 2yrs and does well with it. She hasn't tried anything else, but her stools normalized on it vs. the greasy, bulky stools she had before taking them and she began gaining weight so I assume they are working as they should. I think the best way to determine if the formulation of lipase/protease/amylase is right for someone would have to be to try it and see how you do. How are your digestive symptoms and your weight? Have you adjusted the amount you take with each meal (with your drs guidance) to try and achieve the best results?

We have not used over the counter enzyme supplements. Some people do, in addition to prescription enzymes. Others use fruits that contain natural enzymes to help boost the effects of their prescription enzymes. I am not well informed about this though.
