parents with cf

My son was just diagnosed with cf, I'm now waiting for his genetic labs to come back. My question is do any of you that have a child witth cf have the disease yourself? I was told that parents don't get it if they are a carrier of the gene. I have shronic sinus infections and daildy nasal drainage into my throat making me vomit all the time and dr's have never been able to tell me why this is. I also have chronic back pain and now just recently knee pain(which i never had in my life and no knee injuries), I keep getting sicker with this drainage every year and when I was 24 I had pluritis of my lung. Just wondering if any of you parents of a cfer have it too. Could there be a connection?

There are some parents here who were diagnosed because of their child's diagnosis. I have CF, but my daughter does not. I know that my sister (a carrier) and parents (both carriers, obviously) have sometimes had CF-like symptoms, but none have actually been diagnosed with CF. So, it is possible, but not very common. If you really think it is a possibility, as your son's clinic to do a genetic screen on you. We had my husband screened when our daughter was screened (shortly after birth). They both came up neg. for CF, though Murren (daughter) is a carrier.

My mom was diagnosed with CF this year. She is 53, her only symptoms are sinus problems. She has a well known cf gene and one that is very rare. She has no digestive problems and her lung function is 100%. I was diagnosed 10 years ago, I only have lung involvement.

It could be possible that you have CF...as recommended by HollyCatherine you might want to ask your child's practitioner to run a test on you or refer you to someone who can. Better to know and treat it in the long run than to let problems get worse.

I have CF and we believe that my 2 sons do not (but are obviously carriers.) I have a very common gene, and a very rare gene. My major issue is my sinuses, but I've also had lung involvement, but do not have the digestive issues. I'd been told that it's possible my sons could have CF because of the "rarity" of my 2nd gene. My parents were never tested but are presumed to only be carriers. My mom passed away at age 54 (for non-CF reasons) and my dad and I suspect she was possibly more than just a carrier--she always had bronchitis and sinus issues.

That is very interesting, I will definately get tested as well. this is all new to me we were just told about my son having cf on friday. i'm still learnig about all the similar symptomswe both have compared to others stories here. thank you all for your info.

I've heard that researched proved that Cf gene carriers usually have some sort of asthma or sinus problem....both my parents and my little sister have asthma and sinus issues

My daughter is 23 and has CF and I am 50 without CF and with daily nasal drip, sunis probs, asthma and now have been diagnosed with bronch. My husband and I are carriers obviously. MY Mum is a carrier but not my Dad so I cannot have CF but I sure have similar symptoms but fortunately I am in good shape compared to my 23 year old. I know of other parents who have similar probs but fare much better than their kids with CF.

that is all too interesting. I have probably had 8-10 sinus infections in the last year. Maybe I'm worrying too much , I need to research a ton more. thanks for all your input.

This is all very interesting. My youngest daughter has CF. I have never had any sinus problems or any of the things that have been mentioned on this post. My oldest daughter has asthma. When we found out that my youngest daughter had CF we had our two other children tested for CF. Their tests came back negative. My husband and I are obviously carriers but we don't seem to have any of the problems mentioned above.

I find this fascinating too. I'm the only one in my family with CF, but my Mom has asthma, bronchiectasis and chronic sinus problems. For years I told her she had CF, not asthma, because the steriods that are normally used to treat asthma never worked. She always got better with antibiotics! Then a doctor told us that some carriers show mild symptoms of the disease or have chronic lung problems. Hah, I was right after all!! She was tested for CF and it came back negative. Very interesting though!
