My son who is 9 has always done the masks. They recommend the mouthpeice but we have tried it and he hates it and I actually think he does better with the mask.

Harriett, Shelby, almost 11, still uses her bubbles the fish mask for albuterol and pulmozyme. She only uses a mouthpiece for TOBI. She gets a rash around her nose and mouth when using a mask with TOBI. From what I could tell she is getting more of the med in with the mask. She likes to work on her Facebook while doing treatments and tends to let the mouthpiece hang out of her mouth if I'm not watching constantly. She also still uses the dragon mask sometimes when we have a albuterol neb that's compatable.

We use the mask. For one thing, if your child isn't totally concentrating on breathing out of their mouth, then more than likely, they are breathing through their nose and the med isn't going deep into their lungs anyways. Mel and I had many conversations about the difference between the two.She used the mouthpiece, but, realized a lot of times, she would catch herself breathing out of her nose. She highly recommended keeping Zoe on the mask until she was much older. Also, Zoe has a lot of sinus issues, she was put on Hypertonic 7% bid, so, with the mask, she is getting the solution through her sinuses.

I take home the nose clip they use for pft's to make sure Emily breathes through her mouth when using her mouthpiece- that makes a big difference and eliminates the constant 'breathe through your mouth!!!' reminders that drove her nuts. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> The clip might be really uncomfortable for some kids (it would probably drive me crazy to wear it for half an hour), but she doesn't mind it at all.

I have considered asking about hts for the sinus benefits as well as lungs... she doesn't have sinus disease to the point that many kids have, but does get a couple infections a year and heavy congestion with most bugs.

I appreciate all the input!
