Hi everyone!

I have a 3 month old little boy, Miles. He was in the hospital last week for Failure to Thrive and had an elevated sweat test (42). We're currently waiting for the first DNA test results (not the extensive test).

He hasn't really had anything in the way of symptoms, except for the FTT, but now I'm starting to wonder...

What is considered "persistent" coughing? He does cough, probably 1-2 times a day (not 1-2 single coughs, 1-2 coughing episodes). They don't usually sound very harsh, but I have heard a few where I thought "Geez, that doesn't sound good at all!"

He also does have kinda loud breathing quite a bit. I don't know if it's technically wheezing though. I've actually been trying to find videos of babies wheezing on YouTube so that I would know what it sounds like!

And for the poop question...What is this "greasy" poop I read about? I guess I'm not very well versed in baby poop. Miles's poop usually looks like melty peanut butter...

Please forgive me for all my questions!

Thanks :)

Well all these symptoms can vary a bit. You'll drive yourself crazy if you are looking for a specific definition and searching it out in your four month old. My four month old did not have a cough at all and at this point has a baseline of no cough. She is also pancreatic sufficient, so her poop isn't greasy, but I've ready that it would look like it has the orange seep in grease around the diaper like you would have if you put chilli meat on a paper towel.

Technically, a "persistent" cough is a cough that last longer than about 8 weeks. Of course with CF though, coughing is part of the territory. Most CFers have what is called their "baseline", which is their "normal" cough. But keep in mind many things can make someone cough outside of CF, even something as simple as reflux. Plus, I do think it's a bit uncommon for a little one that young to have a "baseline" just yet!
As for the poop (always a fun subject, lol), when Briceton was first diagnosed he would eat, and eat, and eat..........but would also poop, and poop, and poop! Till this day, even with enzyme therapy, he still poops anywhere from 4-8 times daily. They are VERY greasy, loose, and often runny. They can be so greasy at times you can actually see the grease leak through the other side of the diaper. They can range in color, consistency, and smell. Often times being bloated and excessively gassy comes with the territory as well.
Don't drive yourself crazy with the symptoms though, many things can cause a cough and diarrhea. I do know the waiting for the results is hard, but hang in there!
Best wishes,

Just to let you know, my ds wasn't diagnosed until 4 yrs old. He did not have greasy poo until almost 3. When he was a baby, his poo looked like soft serve ice cream (sorry, I know that is gross)all the time. It was also usually a pale yellow color. He probably pooped 8 times a day when he was Mile's age.
