PFT question

Hello all,

My sister Barbs ( 39/wcf ) was just admitted to hospital and doc says she has PFT of 33. Can anyone tell me what this means? Is she in some real danger, and should she start thinking about lung transplant? Will that # go up with treatments and care in hospital?

I can only assume that the 33 from the PFT test was her FEV1 number. There are about 4 numbers they tend to concentrate on. FEV1 is the amount of air you can blow out in the first second.

33 is low, and it is about where doctors start talking transplant. Sounds like it would not hurt to at least discuss and get it out in the open and an idea you can get use to. Then researching where lung tx centers are, who has the best stats will also help you in making a decision.

It also depends on whether 33% is around her usual number. If her usual numbers are 70s or 80s or something, and she got 33% this time, they may be able to bring it up. When I had MRSA at 16, my PFTs got down to 44%, and with proper antibiotics, I got back up to 80s.

Even tho her numbers sound like they are the range of transplant talk, it doesnt mean she will remain there. I have had a few times that I was that low and was able to bounce back with time & effort & lots of help from my doctor. I will also say that the last time which was in May she threw the idea of transplant at me to think about because we didnt know if I could bounce back again.
