PFT's and Hospitalization

Hello All,

I just got finished with a week long tuneup at my hospital and had a very interesting experience. On Nov. 7th my PFT's were about 44%... on Dec. 13th (after two days in the hospital and on IV's) my PFT's were up to 52%! I was extremely excited. Then, after a week in the hospital (on IV's and doing the IPV with HS 4 x a day) my PFTs went down to 46%. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I was really hoping that after all the intensive treatments that my lung function would improve significantly.. I certainly didn't expect them to get worse. Plus, now that I am at home doing IV's and treatments, I've keep feeling this vibration in the upper part of my chest, which I know is mucus, but I've never felt that before and can't seem to get it up... no matter how many airway clearance techniques I use. Any advice would be appreciated..

Merry Christmas all!

perhaps hospital doesnt 'agree' with you?

whenever ive been admitted i dont get well as fast as when i do iv's at home from the beginning of the course. the mixture of no food, no sleep, no exercise, no privacy and a hard bed thats too short for me really takes its toll.

My last cleanout that sort of happened to me. I wasnt getting better and my PFTs werent improvng as I would have liked them too. And I also went home on IV's, so even at home, it was the same story. Sometimes you just need to hit the 10 day mark b/c once I hit that, I started to feel better. It just took a lil longer to bounce back. Feel Better soon!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

That's pretty much the exact same thing that happened to me, only they didn't go down that fast. I can feel the mucus moving in a certain part of my lung, and i hate that feeling... I'm not used to that. But If you try too hard to get it out, you will irritate your lungs and your throat, so best not to overexert yourself in coughing. My doctor told me that sometimes your pft's don't improve until after you've been finished with the iv's for a little while. It seems like you're doing everything you can. Just keep your doctors informed. If it doesn't get better, they might need to switch up your antibiotics to a different combination... They have to do that with me all the time!
