I agree with NYC, Get evaluated early. I went in for evaluation in my high 40's and mid 50's, and then they set me up to go for the 6 week program where they tune you up and get you super healthy then put you are 'on their radar'. although I tanked a few months after that and had an emergency transplant - good thing they knew who i was!

One other thing to add. Going through the evaluation process might be helpful even if you are not quite ready to be listed yet. My evaluation revealed reflux that I am now medicated for. Also, I had been having some rectal bleeding for a while pre-eval. Thought it was hemmorhoids. Figured I should have it checked out so not a lingering issue post-tx. I elected to have a colonoscopy to check. Turns out I have rectal cancer. Thankfully it's a cureable form but still will require surgery later this month.

There are several things that can make you ineligible for tranplant and active cancer is one of them. After my surgery, I'll have to be cancer free for two years before I'm eligible for tx. I'm so glad I started the eval process when I was still feeling somewhat "healthy". I'm going to work my butt off to make it the next two years.

Good luck to you whatever you decide.

Just wanted to put this out there too. Your doc may not have been nuts, at the time that he recommended you get listed the list functioned by wait time, whereas now it functions by greatest need. Your doc may have been looking at your average rate of decline and how long he/she thought you may have to wait and been trying to get you listed for that reason. If that is the case then good for him/her and it would make perfect sense that when they brought it up you were in great need at the time.

I was at 29% FEV1 when listed and 22% when transplanted, May 2007 was my transplant date.

My doctor told me for males, the general criteria to be listed is 30% FEV and females is 25% FEV, as well as being on oxygen. I am currently waiting for the Loyola board to accept me and give me my LAS score!

Good luck =)

Ldude, I don't know why your doc would tell you that you have to be on O2 to be listed. From all of the people I know, from all different tx centers, there are a lot of us who were not on O2 when we were listed...I wasn't. I would say that it was about a month or two after I was listed that I had to go on O2 full time.

Being on O2 does help boost your LAS a little though. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
