PGD - Success rates?

PGD - Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis.

Basically IVF is achieved and the embryo's are then tested for genetic "defects" or in this case, Cystic Fibrosis. Only those embryos (sperm and egg already met) which don't have the disease will be considered for transfer. The ones with CF detected are discarded and destroyed.

Carla- I should have been more clear about it- you don't have to live in Michigan. I live in NJ and used an IVF clinic in NJ. But on Day 3, the embryos each had a cell taken from them and those cells were flown to Michigan for PGD testing. On Day 5, Genesis calls the IVF clinic with the results. If there are viable embryos and no CF, they are implanted at the IVF clinic. The embroys stayed in NJ, they just lost a cell each to Michigan.

PGD stands for Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis.... Using IVF and then having embryos tested for CF before implanting them back into the uterus.

Just for the record- we did not have to destroy any embryos, We had one with CF that didn't make it in the lab.
