Hi everyone, I am very interested in some feedback from someonr who has used the physio vest, sorry I don't know the correct name but I am from Australia and they don't seem to exist here. But if I get some positive feedback from users of the vest I will endeavour to locate and purchase one.

The vests are very convenient as U dont need anyone else to do your treatment. The vest does all sections at one time unlike manual clapping so it saves on time also. I personally dont feel I get as much out of the vest as I do with manual clapping, but it works to keep me healthy. If I am "sick" then I have hubby do a bit of manual or do an extra vest treatment to help things move. It is VERY expensive. Some people love it, some say its ok & others didnt like it at all. I would hate to see U spend the fortune (presuming U had enough $$) to find out its not your thing!

From what I understand, there are a couple different compies that make them. My daughter just got The Vest (www.thevest.com) shortly before Christmas, and it has worked like a charm on her. We didn't start CPT until she was 18 months when we got the dx, so by then she was extremely resistant. With the vest, she sits through it watching Elmo, and it really seems to help. Good luck in your search! Visit the website, at least it can give you some info on it.

I too am from Australia, and have a toddler with CF. I questioned the doctors and they seemed reluctant about recommending the vest.
A nurse also mentioned if they were that good, us in Aust would have ordered them by now. They obviousley have not seen the need for them, as yet.

Nothing can be better than manually doing your pysio. What's 20 minutes of your time for keeping your lungs healthy and mucus free.

thats how my doctor reacted when i asked him about the vest. 'its useless because there is no work done by the patient' he said, which i think is a load of bull. just because something doesnt require much effort from the patient, doesnt mean its not working. take a look at percussion, no effort from the patient there but it still works! also, the research is there saying the vest works. australia is just stuck in the dark ages and poo poos anything that might cost the government or the patient extra money.

that nurse sounds like a moron, sorry. we all know there are so many good things, in regards to cf care, that we dont have here because it either has not been approved by the tga or the government wont put it on the pbs or because people here simply dont care about discovering new things.

as to buying the vest, we cannot purchase them directly from the suppliers/manufacturers. ive been told its techincally illegal for them to sell it to us because it has not been 'approved' in australia. you can get someone in the US to buy it for you thought, and send it over. but be prepared to cough up alot of $. this isnt covered by australian health insurance either.

And I too am from Australia. I have been told by my daughters CF doctors that they are reluctant to recommend them in Australia because there is no studies to show they are better than manual CPT. They are expensive and they would prefer not to encourage anything other than manual CPT.

BUT I do feel they miss some valuable points. It is hard to run a household (not to mention keep it clean!) as well as get through all these treatments. The Vest would allow the child to sit through the treatment and allow you to continue other things at the same time. Also there are people out there who don't do their manual CPT regularly - this would help to ensure they do keep up with regular treatments.

My personal opinion (which can only have a small bearing on your decision because we have never used one) is that the Vest could offer convenience to a person dealing with such a full on medical routine, however manual CPT seems to work better (a lot of those using the Vest have indicated this). My eldest daughter manages to sit through her manual CPT with minimal wiggling so we will continue doing this. But I will keep an eye on any new developments with the Vest as I am sure it will soon enough be improved to further contend with manual CPT.
