PI but never a weight problem until pregnancy

Hi Lauren,

I too am worried about my weight during/after pregnancy. I am 5'8" and my starting weight before pregnancy was 183 lbs. I am pancreatic insufficient. I have always had that extra weight on me so that if I did get sick, losing some weight wouldn't be an issue. Now at 2 months pregnant, I am down about 5 lbs. I know it has a lot to do with my morning sickness though. I am only planning on BF for 1 to 1-1/2 months. That is what we did for our first son and it worked it wonderfully for us. We figured he got the best of the breast milk and then we weaned him to formula. I know that BF is best, but sometimes it doesn't work out for everyone.

So I think you need to start weighing the pros and cons. BF takes a lot of extra calories. Would you consider doing something like half BF/half formula? I know a lot of people don't even want to think about that, but you do have options. Like someone said, maybe you have too much on your plate right now. I think a lot of us CF women think we're superwoman and can do everything (I know I do!) and I don't ask for help and I don't give up very easily. But sometimes you have to take a step back and give in somewhere. If your health is being affected by your weight, you should really try to find some way to get it back up. I also credit my good lung health with my good weight. A lot of studies have shown it has a huge part in keeping CFers lungs healthy.

Keep your health in mind. I know you want the best for your son, but what is best is keeping yourself healthy for him.

lauren, since overall we tend to be similar on the stable, healthy side, i have been trying to think in terms of balancing non-cf pregnancies and cf pregs since day one. with myself, i get so caught up in the cf way of thinking...which is neccesary of course at times, but i can forget that alot of what we experience is exactly the same as non cf women.
with myself i try to balance looking at the stories of cf moms i know and experiences of non cf moms in my life, like all my sisters and family, ect.
thinking back to my sil's most recent preg for example-it seems that around 4-6 months post delivery with her son she starting losing alot of weight. i think i noticed her preg and post preg body more bc i was preg myself at the time. all the sudden she went to a size 2 from being a 6. now her son is 14 months and i can see the weight is coming back on (not that i'd tell her that!!!lol) bc she's barely bf and he's eating alot of solids. recalling to my others sis' preg, it does seem that around the 4 month + mark, weight started coming off moms. maybe bc babies are eating more, growing alot more....milk is changing a little at this point.

it just seems logical that if we didn't have this problem before, why would we have it post baby if our lungs are in decent shape and haven't changed drastically from preg? its not as if the preg has changed our pancreatic system or metabolism long term. it must just be related to calories taken from us from baby-what is being taken from our calorie bank isn't equaliing what is going in. what goes in must come out, ect..

think of it this way-you are 5'3.5. 120 lbs at that height is plenty of weight. i'd keep a close eye on it. if you keep losing, then start more solids with him. you know your body too. if you really think its related to infection then you'll know what to do. one thing my ob told me when i was preg was that if i stressed about my weight/eating....my body wouldn't store the cals. she said the mind is a powerful thing and stress would keep my weight down. if you remember, i got very sick agt 6 mos preg and lost 8lbs+! my total weight gain w preg was 18 lbs so i really struggled to get lbs. i understand where u are coming from.
i think the milk stash is a great idea. now that my health is back to normal i'm starting it too. i have no plans to stop bf but i think its good to have a supply in case i have a crisis with my health and i'm in hosp, or taking a bad bf med, ect..
another thing my doc says is that the how the preg and delivery goes is a good indication of how your body will be post baby. we had such a smooth time thankfully that i really think that will continue for you.

Great advice ladies. I think I'm getting a little ahead of myself. My weight is fine, I guess it's just that I feel like I'm struggling to keep it up at this lower place. I also didn't mention that I think a lot of this is hormonal. Anyone know when things regulate post pregnancy? I've introduced solids this past week with much success. It's He takes 23 oz. between 9-5 in case anyone is curious. Eating solids seems to decrease his intake by 4-6 oz. We'll see if he needs to make up for the lost count though during the night.

I agree maybe I have too much on my plate. WHat is it about motherhood though that is draining if I'm at work all day and my LO is sleeping through the night? Maybe I'm not giving myself credit for something but it just doesn't seem like I should be exhausted. I am also trying to workout everyday...oh and pull my weight with cooking, etc. so yeah I guess it's a lot. The thing I realized is that when I was childless and working full time I rested a lot on the weekends. I mean sometimes two 2-4 hr. naps. Now these are very hard to get. So it means I'm "going" for 7 days. Yep a change probably needs to be made. Sorry if this post makes little sense. It's all starting to come together as I'm writing. Thanks for helping me.
