PICC Line Scare

I've had the "clicking" noise you referred to, and it happened while in radiology getting it placed. You could see the line looping and going up into the neck instead of down toward the heart. I don't know how yours could do that when already placed though (IF that's what it is).

I have extreme anxiety with picc placement and finally asked for something before my last one was placed. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Typically my arm is extremely sore after placement, but after doing so with antianxiety meds, it didn't bother me at all. My docs must be seeing a lot of this as they were totally fine with giving me something. I don't think I'll do it again without it.

Every time my line hasn't flushed, it's been a blood clot-3 of them so far. They start me on blood thinners just before I have my line placed and throughout the time that I use it. I've been told that I have to do daily injections as they have found the levels that they need the thinner at in the body swing too much in cfers so the cumadin (sp?) pills won't work. So I do injections of lovenox everyday.

Have you ever flushed your picc line with 100 units heparin to prevent the clot at the end of tip.?

to thin your blood with a thinner , I think would be very dangerous, if you started to have hemoptysis. !! whats the daily dose of lovenox you take?

I was hospitalized for pancreatitiis in 2009 and was put on a ortho ward, only bed available. and their protocol was to give all patients 5,000 units heparin 2x s aday to prevent blood clots., as ortho patients are imobile for a time... The nurse wanted to give me heparin shot and i freaked out, i said NO WAY ...do yous even look at my history, yea i need my blood thinned with 10,000 units a day,,,,yikes!!!

Oh I hate having piccs placed too. ativan really helps take edge off. and now reading this about the picc flipping into the neck artery and clicking, oh geez, just makes me so weak kneed.

when I get a picc in, I keep them in as long as I can, the one now has been in 1 yr...and its had lots of use and still works great.

I have had a groshong picc line once, and the nurse flushed it properly with saline, using the postive pressure and clamping technique and 8 hrs later when I went to run med and flushed it, it was blocked, almost midnite too, but nurse came out and got it going...so went back to heparin with the groshong too.
