The average length of iv's is 14 days & since this is new chances are good it will be that or less. HOWEVER; there are times that additional times is needed....

This is something that will be monitored during the iv therapy so they can decide better according to testing etc.

Make sure you ask for either the numbing cream or she gets a numbing shot before they stick the picc line needle in. It will help reduce the pain.

Have the doc write up orders for heat packs to put on for the pain (mine always hurts in my armpit). At my hospital, if the doc doesn't write it up, you don't get it. Also, I prefer that the IV team puts it in and not the doc. The IV team brings a type of ultrasound, so it's less likely that you run into any snags getting it placed. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
