Hey everyone, I am relatively new to the site, but follow the posts and respond once in a while. Anyways, I need some advice. I can currently in the hospital now for a tune up (boo). I normally get IV's every 10-12 months, and get a PICC. Lately, this last time being the worst, I have abad reaction to the placement, as in, they had to call a rapid response because I could not breathe and sats were dropping. I asked the nurse afterwards, she said my HR was in the 150's, BP was 150's/100, sats were 82. It has happened before, but never this bad. It's almost like an allergic reaction, but they don't use any contrast, and I have no problem with locals. I've had Ativan and Valium prior to placement, no difference. I've had placements at 4 different hiospitals as we have moved, it's happenend at each. I've had it placed by the PICC nurse and radiology, still no change. For the longest time we thought it was panic attacks, which is why we tried the Ativan. This most recent time, I'm at a new hospital, and my cf doc was finally able to give some sort of a reason. It always happens at the end, when it is being flushed. He said my system overreacts to it, and tries to overcompensate. I just don't understand why it doesn't happen every time I use it? Anyways, has anyone else had this reaction? Has anything helped? My docs at this point are telling me there is no way to prevent it and want me to get a port. I don't think they are 100% sure what is happening and don't want to take another chance, since it is getting worse. So now I am freaked out about a port. I feel like I don't get IV's frequent enought to warrant one, but I don't see any other option. So, any advice would be great.

Thanks!

are you having a reaction to the heparin or whatever blood thinner they are flushing through there? i really don't have any idea what would be causing that reaction but thats the only think i could think of...i don't really have any answers for you but you have to flush your port as well so my question would be are you going to have the same or similar reactions to flushing your port? You have to maintenance flush your port every month whether you're using it for IVs or not to make sure the line is clear, no clots, etc.
i got my port 14 months ago and used it 3 times in 4 months but havn't used it (except for monthly flushes) in the last 10 months. they couldn't even thread a PICC through my veins anymore. i personally really like having it, its pretty easy to deal with. mine is about 2.5 or so inches below my collar bone on the right side. it's hidden by the majority of my clothes and really only shows when i'm wearing a bathing suit. sorry this wasn't more helpful!

Jaime - thanks for the input. It's only the initial time, right after it is placed. At first they though they were threading it too far, but radiology solved that issue. No heparin either, they apparently don't use it with PICC's anymore, no need. But I have had it in the past. As far as the reaction, I did get more info, they told me it's called a vasovagal (sp?) reaction, and that it is pretty uncommon. So, the port idea is growing on me, I like thinking that i won't have to worry about the PICC the next time...
