PICC vs Port

I LOVE MY PORT TOO! I have had mine for four years and no problems (knock on wood, knock on lots of wood). I didn't feel like it meant my cf was getting worse I was actually relieved because I hated getting PICC's! It has been so wonderful, my husband does the monthly flushes and since a have a double lumen he also accesses me before I go into the hospital because you never know if you will get a good nurse or not!

Sonia I have never had a problem exercising, it may take a little while after getting it in to use the muscle where it is (chest or arm) but it has never bothered me even accessed when doing weights or cardio. Oh, mine is upper right chest and before I lost so much weight it wasn't visable at all, even accessed (unless it was with the hospital's big needles, home health has better needles).

Also welcome to the forum Jodi! Hope you find the love and support you need and let us know what you decide!

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>I'm just curious. Why does everyone go PICC line, when for many people, a MID-line can do the same thing? The last few times I was in, I always went midline, and it always lasted me 2-3 weeks. A PICC to me is just WAY too close to my heart. If you get an infection or some other weirdness, it's literally right at the entrance of one of your hearts ventricles...No thanks here. </end quote></div>

I started out getting PICC's in my left arm when I was 10, then had some problems with that arm, so we started switching to the right, then they started the midlines on the right. So the end of the midline would go up to my shoulder...so all the medicine would get dropped right there. Well one time when I had the Midline, it was giving me lots of pain in my shoulder during the infusion, as well as the saline rinse. I probably had the mid line 2 times and when that happened the second time, they ended up having to take it out and put a PICC in the left arm. Now I cant even get PICC's on my right arm, because of the damage (scar tissue, im guessing) that the midline did to that arm. If they even try to put a PICC on that side it wont go up past the spot where the midline ended.

And Welcome Jodi!! I cant wait to start reading your blogs! <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">

i've had three mid-lines and two PICC lines in my life. i've accessed them all myself, the only time home health came in was to change the dressing or draw blood and take my vitals. my last PICC i was working at a bank and doing transactions while my antibiotics were infusing, boy did i get some weird looks. my doctor has never mentioned a port to me. i guess since i go about ever three years needing iv's isn't worth a port???

i liked the PICC better than mid-line because i always felt like the mid-line would come out since it was only eight inches in my arm.

antways thats my opinion <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
