Playing the CF card

I have a son 12 yr w/cf. First year in Jr. High. Made the basketball team and then didn't get to play one game because of grades. I'm wicked pissed because no matter how much I tried to help him work it out with this one teacher she would not help him raise his grade. I see now that he has to fight to get credit for the work he does do in this teachers class. I'm tempted to do a 504 and get him out of doing the class altogether. Is Social Studies that important anyway? Would it be a mistake to use this?

are his other grades going well?

If his teacher is being impossible even though he is trying hard maybe it wouldnt be such a bad idea to drop the social studies.

I have always thought that english, maths and science were the important subjects, depending on what
type of job he wants in the future i spose.

and sport is very important for a person with cf.

I would get him on the 504 no matter what. Courtney does not like to "be different" so I like the 504 plan because the teachers receive a paper at the beginning of the year to let them know that she might need extra bathroom breaks, etc. That way it is not made a big deal out of if she needs to get up quietly and go to the bathroom.

Also the 504 allows her extra time to make up work if she misses a large amount of school. If she is gone for more than a week the teachers are great about getting her work together and giving it to her brother to take home.

What state are you in? Each state seems to have different rules on how to take care of children with special needs.

I teach. I doubt a 504 can get you out of social studies, unless there are mental handicaps. Cf is not a mental handicap. I don't agree with playing the CF card to get out of the class, it teaches your son that if he has a problem, he can use to get out of it. Just my 2 cents

Wicked pissed? are you from New England by any chance? LOL

I agree with Seana about getting a 504. Both my kids are on one. It helps them with lots of different things, like extra time to do make up work, having books at home, etc. I don't consider that "playing the CF card". Having a 504 doesn't get them out of doing work, but it helps out when they need it.

As far as "playing the CF card". It can help in certain situations when health issues stand in the way of the kids doing their best. This doesn't sound like a CF related situation. Kids need to know you are their advocate and will work with them to better their coping skills, not to remove all obstacles from their lives. It might be a mistake to use "the card" in the case that you mentioned. Your son DOES need Social Studies in his education. If he is having trouble with a teacher, go to the guidance department. Request a conference. Develop a plan for raising his grade.

While all this is being discussed, talk to the guidance about doing a 504. There are lots of us on the forum who can give you some ideas. You're being a good pro-active mom. Your son is wicked lucky.

I am not sure if a 504 plan would be good or not, it sounds like it might help with true CF issues...A lot of the mom's on here seem to think it is a good idea.. and I think mom's know best when it comes to their child

As far as the CF card..

I agree with Allie on this one. Teaching your son to play a card when he has a problem will only lead to irresponsible behavior down the road.. I think if the teacher is being a jerk, like some teachers can be.. I would fight tooth and nail for your childs rights.. BUt if overall the rule is.. no games if your grades are down...and your son's grades are down for what ever reason.. I don't think he should play.

One of the things I am most grateful for growing up, is no one knew I had CF.. and it was never an exuse for anything..

I would look into the 504 but not to get him out of class, but to make him & them realize that sometimes accomodations can/need to be made. Its the law now......if nothing else it would help him for his overall education not just getting to play in a basketball game. Good Luck!
