About the only class a 504 is going to get your kid out of is PE. </end quote></div>

It didn't get me out of PE, It got me put into the PE class with the down syndrom kids. At least I finally got an A in PE!</end quote></div>

I know this is not politically correct, but it struck my funny bone!</end quote></div>

What ---- I didn't say retard.... what's the political correct way? Ah - Mentally Challenged? That's like most of the people I work with, but they don't have down syndrom...!

The whole idea of teaching Social Studies is so that history won't repeat itself. Yes you need the class.

If he is doing badly and it isn't because of sickness then he needs to study more. If he is failing right now then if he starts to get good grades in the class then he brings up his grade. The teacher shouldn't have to do anything about previous grades unless it was because he was sick.

He does not need to play basketball. He can get his sports in tons of other ways. He does need an education and he does need to learn that he can't use this as an out when things don't go his way.

My son has a OHI (other health impairment) in place .. Im guessing its different than a 504 plan because his doctor went to the meeting and was very happy he got put on the OHI instead of the 504. Its centered around his health and not his need for speech therapy and Occupational therapy. Regardless I think that if it was a health issue id speak up but in no way would I ever use his CF to get him out of taking a class. I think you need to speak to his teacher about whats going on and why he is failing.. If that doesnt work I would speak to the principle. I think you should try to get to the root of the problem instead of using the cf card <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

It sounds like Your child needs to Drop
the teacher and not the class,.,,

Fact is, there are Bad teachers...

My Son had a problem in a class in Jr high
He was a Honer Roll Student all thru School.

I found out that 5 other kids had transfered out of her
class and Did very Well,,,, I transfered my Son to
another teacher to and his grades went back up to an A.
He was in the NHS all through high school...

So Sometimes it is the Teacher and Not the Student
who has the problem.....

have to admit it made me laugh too! thanks melissa...i had no idea what everybody was going on about with the 504 thing. and also i dont think its a good idea to use it...especially for a subject like social studies, makes it seem as though its ok to use cf to get out of anything thats difficult.

I'm with everyone else on this one. Don't use the CF card in this situation. Not a good idea. It is teaching him at a very young age that when something gets difficult, say you have CF, and the problem disappears. I personally think that you should be pushing your son harder. I can't even tell you how hard my parents pushed me in high school and thank God they did. They also, however, knew when to push and knew when not too. It is a very delicate balance. And here is my experience with bad teacherrs: For some reason in my town there was always two teachers to every class (ie two social studies teachers/biology teachers or whatever). And every single time, I always was placed in the class with the more difficult teacher. Everytime I stayed. And everytime, once the experience was over, they ended up being my favorite teachers (even though everyone else hated them). So make him stick it out. Make him study. Make him work. He is just as capable as every single one of his peers and he needs to know that at a young age so he knows he is on the same level as him. In this situation, no, don't use the card.
