They just passed a law in ND to pan smoking in public building excluding bars. I'm all for it even as a smoker. I can handle eating supper without a cig. and if you can't you have problems.

Is an allout ban in this country to smoke in the work place. Ie, everywhere where people work, offices, pubs, bars everywhere! And its great so I voted in the hope it'll be the same for you!

Our paper just published a list of smoke free restaraunts in our city. That was awesome, since the last two times we went out to eat and asked for non smoking, we were a table away from the smoking section. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0">

Diane,

that is great i will definitely do it. In Massachusetts now there is no smoking allowed anywhere indoors, and it is SO GREAT. the cf part is wonderful of course, but it is also so great just to be able to go out and not have your nice clothes smell like smoke!! good luck in PA.

It looks like the non-smokers are winning so far. =-) The questions were worded weird, though. "Would it be okay for restaurants to allow smoking as long as it doesn't affect non-smokers?" Ha ha, of course it would be okay, but that's what restaurants claim they do NOW. =-) Heh, heh, of course it doesn't matter since most people said no. =-) Maybe are they looking to up the standards between smoking and non-smoking sections. I remember them saying somethingabout separate rooms and filtered vents or something like that. If there were standards like that which restaurants had to follow, so we really did not have to deal with the cigarette smoke, I'd be all for it. That, and if smokers weren't allowed to smoke right outside the dorr would make me happy enough. =-)

I have a smoking related etiquette question. This morning I took my 2 children to the parade in town. I have a four year old and a 10 month old. My 10 month old has CF. The man sitting right next to us was a smoker. In the 2 hours that we were sitting there, he probably smoked 10 cigarettes. How do I handle this situation? That smoke can cause serious effects on my son's lungs. Especially since right now, he does have a lung infection. Is it ok for me to tell the man that my son has CF and the smoke is very bad for him, and ask the man to either put the cigarette out, or move away from us while he is smoking. It would be much easier for him to walk 30 feet or so away from us, than it would be for me to pack up my kids and move. Has anyone else had to handle something like this? Besides my son having CF, I think smoking is disgusting, and I don't believe that I (or anyone) should have to sit there and breathe his second-hand smoke while trying to enjoy a family activity.

Proudmom, there are some people who are approachable and can be asked, "can you please put the cigarette out, it is really bothering me?!" (sometimes you won't even need to divulge the CF information) and they will do it. There are others who are so rude and will go on and on about how they are outside and it is a free country and....blah blah blah. I find it useful at a time when someone wants to go on like that, to go find a security guard. They are always more than willing to ask the person to remove themselves because although it is a "free country", you have a right to breathe clean air and they have the obligation to move themselves where their activities aren't bothering those around them. Then if they want to argue with a security guard, they are liable to be removed in cuffs (i've seen it).

So I personally feel that as long as it is initially asked respctfully, there is absolutely nothing wrong with requesting that.
