Pleurisy or lung inflammation

I have been having horrible chest/sternum pain. Just got a call from the nurse that I may have simple lung inflammation or pleurisy. I am scheduled to go in next week and do another lung function test and do a chest x-ray. They started me on a predisone burst today to see if the tightness and coughing will respond to it before they even see me. Ironic thing is I was just in clinic last week and lung function test was okay (not amazing) and when they listened to my lungs, doc said nothing was out of the ordinary.
Anyone else ever have pleurisy before?? Now easy is it to treat?? If it is a lung inflammation this is the 3rd or 4th of these since September of last year. So frustrating. I do have NTM (mycobacteria) and aspergillis. Is this just part of those lovely lung issues??
I googled pleurisy and boy does it sound just like my symptoms. It is easy to get rid of???

Both of my kids have had bouts with pleurisy ( ages 20 & 15) especially the last few years. We took a trip to emergency room a couple of weeks ago the pain was so bad for my 16 year old. CF doctors wanted to rule evrything else out. I have wondered if it may have to do with the bugs they grow. They have grown out the same two you have.INTERESTING!

Hey Mamerth. I've had pleurisy a couple of times. It hurts on inhalation which is a real "pain" since you inhale so freaking often. The predinisone will help but some of it will just take time to calm down. I took ibuprofen to help with the pain & inflammation as well.

When I've gotten pleurisy, there is usually an infection brewing as well. That may or may not be the case with you but wanted to give you a heads up.

Peace,
Steph

Thank you so much for the feedback so far. I gave a sputum culture last week amd so far no news. Yes the inhale is what sets off the pain. My muscles are a mess from all the coughing. I have had croup 2-3 times this past winter and then a plain old cold. I was hoping the spring would have been a turning point....no such luck yet. I am on 40 mg of prednisone until i see the doc next week.

I was afraid my NTM and aspregillis might be the villians in this. Hoping for no infectiion as it has been a year since my last tune up.

I have that rather often. I would say once every 2-3 months. The frequency and intensity varies. Usually, an episode of pleurisy/inflammation will be followed/relieved by an episode of hemoptysis.
It was much worse before I had a bilateral embolization to fix my oversized lung arteries (my right lung artery was 3 times the normal size!).

If you have a lot of inflammation and have pleurisy often, especially if you have episodes of hemoptysis too, I suggest that you ask your doctor to have your lung arteries checked for their size. Chronic inflammation will cause them to grow in size because of the amount of blood that has to be supplied to your lungs to feed the inflammation. You probably want to have it fixed before it becomes too serious.
