PND Cough?

Can anyone help? My daugher has had a cough for about 2 weeks now. It isn't aweful, but it's productive. I am pretty sure it is coming from drainage (clinic appt was 2 days ago and lungs sounded clear). She is on her last day of augmentin (sp?), but it is still there...this reminds me of Mommafirst's post...)

So, I think based on her history that when she is winding down from a cough, the xopanex (and now definitely the HTS) make it drag out because it irritates her already irritated airways. I've scaled back to pulmozyme only for the next 2 days to test my theory.

1.) Does anyone else experience this?
2.) What do you do to get rid of the PND? Sinus rinses? She doesn't complain of any pain anywhere in her head, so I am unclear of whether or not there was a sinus issue to begin with!

Your thoughts are very much appreciated.

If it is from irritation and inflamation, you might ask them to put her on a quick burst of prednisone. Alyssa did 5 days once we finished IVs and it really fixed the dragging on cough. Our docs figured she probably has an asthma component to her CF and so we are adding flovent to her daily meds to try to avoid the ongoing cough in the future.

I totally agree that the HTS may be irritating already irritated airways, but I wouldn't pull the xopenex. That is a bronchiodialator and it helps open the airway.

Good luck, I hope it stops already. Docs *should* be able to see if there is post nasal drip coming down as well.

I agree that pulling the Xoponex is probably not a good idea. It's important to keep the airways open, especially as she gets over illness. It's possible the HTS could be an issue though.

Emily can have significant sinus/nasal congestion without complaining of pain, so we use the saline rinses whenever she has a lot of congestion up there and I think it does help, esp before she lays down to sleep when postnasal drip will cause a lot of coughing. She hasn't had an actual sinus infection in a long time but I keep out for the congestion.

I'd try the rinses and see if that flushes out congestion; it can't hurt and may help. But if trying prednisone helps it may clue you in on an inflammatory aspect that would benefit from being addressed. Emily would be much sicker, much more often if not on inhaled steroids.

I hope he is feeling better soon... it's frustrating when these things drag on and on and we don't know why.

Thanks Ladies! Ok, I did a bronchodialator AND the sinus rinse tonight. Gosh, she hasn't had anything coming out her nose, but when I did that rinse (sorry, TMI) a bunch of clear, but VERY THICK mucus came out the other side. We'll see if this helps after awhile.

Coincidentally, my husband has been consistently telling me he wants to have a steroid on hand. I guess I'll run this by the doc in a few days and see what he thinks.

Have a great night!

Yes, we've had that experience with Emily too- very little evidence of congestion when she blows, but when doing the rinse WOW. Sometimes it will take doing most of the bottle to start getting much out but once it starts a lot will come out, and it will take refilling the bottle a few more times to clear it all out so at this point I just mix up 18oz at a time so I can refill the bottle as needed. I squirt a couple times on one side and keep alternating until it runs clear. She will often resist doing it but admit later that it feels better. I'm so glad it helped your daughter. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

eta> our team told us we could do it up to about 4x day for Emily. We usually only do it a couple times, but do the max when very sick.
