poor weight gain

I have a 13 year old daughter with cf who is not gaining weight at all. She currently weighs 64 lbs. and is at a stand still on gaining. The docs. have added zinc and changed her enzyme. We are going back to clinic in about 3 weeks to recheck weight. What if she still hasn't gained? I have read posts about people with feeding tubes, but when are they necessary? I try to get calories in my daughter, but it's like the old saying "you can led a horse to water but you can't make it drink" I'm just worried that she is withering away before my eyes. Too bad I can't give her some of my extra, I have plenty to share.

Its such a rough age on top of it all. I had asked my doctor about a feeding tube about 12 years ago. She did not agree or approve of it for a few reasons. The main one being that she felt I could get the weight on myself. It took a lot of work and tons of time, but I did. I dont know all the details of your daughters resistance, but maybe confronting her with the possibility of a feeding tube & EVERYTHING that comes with it....maybe the pressure of her age would be enough to really kick into overdrive on her own. I am sorry that there isnt a quick fix for these times!

When my daughter was 13, we had problems with her weight too. She had a really good appetite but never gained weight. She also really fought us with her enzymes. You wouldn't believe where we would find them. The dietician was always after her to gain weight. We used to give her Boost supplements, but she never gained. We added fat to everything. Worked on mom but not her. Now she is 22, she is on a different enzyme and she is fianlly gaining weight. Have they made you collect stool samples?

We collected stool samples in the beginning and have since changed enzymes once. She isin't crazy about any of the boost or pediasure type drinks. I have tried everyting to get weigt on her, but the harder we push the more she resists. She doesn't give us any trouble taking the enzymes, but frequently will grab a snack and forget to take one. I have talked to her about the possibility of a feeding tube and she can't grasp it. Her response was "yeah, maybe then you will leave me alone about eating " I guess we will see what happens at clinic next month.

My daughter is only 2 yrs old & has cf..but I was thinking that maybe if you casually start doing "family" things or "Mom & daughter things" & incorporate eating into it, that may work....if your like me, you will have to exercise a little more..but I think it would be worth it to you in the end......maybe shopping & milkshakes..or pizza & icecream night.....she may also like Carnation Instant Breakfast...my mom, who does not have cf, had trouble gaining weight..her doc had her on carnation & she would go all the time & get a peanut butter milkshake, too, which helped...maybe if you do it without her knowing what you're intent is, she'll participate...hope this helps..I know my time is coming.....maybe you'll be able to give me pointers then.....GOOD LUCK!

Hello there. My name is Jessica. I do understand what you're talking about big time okay. I (myself) are having problems too with gaining more weight on me too. You see I was born with Cystic Fibrosis. Everytime I go see my doctor at the clinic (every six weeks) I would lose some weight or gain some weight just alittle. So they told me to try some Boost Plus to see if that work.

Also, every Tuesday before I eat some breakfast. I would step up on the scale too see my weight is now. My weight been running between 100lbs - 110lbs. My weight used to be somewhere in the 117lbs before I got really, really sick lately okay.

So maybe you can try too see if the Boost Plus work or not alright.

Sincerely,
Jessica Berry
