popping in chest?

Hi everyone I'm new here. I am a 29yo mail with CF. I'm fairly healthy but something weird came up this weekend. I was coughing a lot on Sat night in my sleep. I have a pain in my ribs on my right side, seems like a bruised rib, which I've done before, no biggie. If I breath in and out it feels like its popping with my chest expanding and contracting. I can feel it with my hands, and I can hear it with a stethescope. No blood in my mucous at all. I thought it was plug pain at first but it is not. I took a vit k just to be safe. Could it be a large mucous plug thats stuck, or do you think that I fractured a rib? I can place my fingers on the spot where the sound is coming from. I'm giving my DR a call but thought I'd see if anyone experienced it here.
Thanks,
Kevin

I have the exact same thing. It is pleurisy (inflammation of the lining of the lungs) It is temporarily releived by taking ibuprofen but in the long term the only thing that has helped is to take prednisone. 5 days of prednisone usually takes it away. Only problem for me is I just took a course of prednisone for something else and I probably can't take it again for a couple months. It's really annoying.

Just did some searching, and to describe it better it is more like a crackling I guess, but I don't usually have crackling that pronounced. Also if this is in the wrong forum could one of the mods move it to the correct one, as I saw theres an adults and an adults with cf forum.
Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,

Hi! I just noticed you and I have the same mutations. I've never had what you are experiencing but have had pleurisy pain which for me is only painful on the inhale (not the exhale)...and I didn't have crackling. Actually mine was more likely strained intercostal muscles. How has your cf been most of your life? I have always had lung involvement but work hard to keep my lungs clear and seem to manage. I am very active. I have FVC of 78% and FEV1 of 66%. My digestive involvement is minimal as I maintain weight just fine. I am pancreatic insufficient though don't get me wrong. Where do you live?

Welcome! I hope you continue to post.

Well I spole to the DR, and he thinks its a bruised or fractured rib, or strained muscle, could be anyone of them really. There also seems to be a mucous plug int that spot also, that I have to work on getting out. For soe reason I get mor mucous on my lower right lung. I have always been like that.

I don't remember my percentages from my last PFT in nov. I am somewhere around hi 70's low 80's for fvc, Can't remember my fev1 for the life of me. I'll check it out next time I go. I usually just look at the raw #'s as I remember what I was the previous times. I've been pretty steady with my CJ. I was in the hosp in 92 and then in 03. So I don't get really sick that often (knocking on wood). I have always had lung involvement, and it seems to have been worse when I was younger. I did have a prob with weight and had a G-tube from 93 to 96-97ish. I stopped using it and maintained my weight and my Dr said I could have it pulled. I have been maintaining my weight since then. I live in SE PA outside Phila in Delaware county.

Your ribs can actually slip out of alignment. You'd think not since they're pretty much stationary but it happens. I had one go out on the plain back from New York a couple weeks ago. I would get the same popping feeling right there and it hurt bad! I went the chiropractor the next day and he got it back in place, I felt so much better!
