Port Access

My daughter has had her port for eight years now. She had the implant done when she was four years old. At the time she could of cared less. She didn't start hating it until she was about nine. She is now 12 and a half and hates it more with every passing year. I don't know if you ever truly get used to it.

Here is a website that you might be interested in. It includes an animation showing how the port works.

I use to not be able to use tegaderm but our center started clening the site with chlorhexidine and that alleviate the sores. You can also try something called IV 3000.

Jst wanted to add something. I only had my port put in, in September, and its best thing i ever did. I dnt even notice its there. And as to recovery, can i just say, that exactly a week after my operation, i was dancing the nite away in a nightclub celebrating my bday.

Anyway....EMLA cream is great for giving shots.. or doing and injection..but for PICC line, IV Or Central line insertion it is very BAD.. IT is a vasoconstictior..meaning it cuts off the vascular supply (Shrienks the arteries and veins) making it harder to get IV, PICC OR Central line access.. The cath.. won't advance as easy.....

Well, you can use Emla to access your Port and that's all I was ever concerned about since they knocked me out to place it <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
