Port Accessed and Shower questions

My port is in the side of my boob and I feel like I am accessed all the time. I shower every day. I have a rectangle tegaderm over it. I only need to change it every 4 days or so. When I use the dressings from the dressing change kit, they only last one day for me which is why I go for the bigger ones.

1. Aqua Guard is great -- the best that we used as Tiffany would do showers almost every day but only change dressings once a week.
2. If no Aqua Guard we would use a ziplock bag and cut it down to size. We would place a washcloth cut down to size on the dressing and then the ziplock plastic bag and then tape it on. the wash cloth soaks up most the water that would come through the tape.
3. hand held shower head solves about half the issue as well. I would install it the day that Tiffany would start I.V.s and then put the nice shower head back on after she was done with IV
4. There is no way to keep all the water out -- you just minimize it as much as possible. We would have paper towels ready to go after we took the plastic off to soak up any water that got in.

Good luck!

I'm glad that you're finding things you think will work! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Nothing like still being clean, even when accessed!

Aidan is 7 and is often on IVs with a port in his chest. He is currently on his 4th week of IVs and we shower him every day. I use Saran Wrap and tape it over port needle and dressing. I will admit it doesn't stay completely dry but it seems to be okay.

I use glad press and seal wrap. it sticks to my skin but i tape it as well because it's not so strongly stuck to my skin that it won't come off without extra adhesive. sometimes water does get in but if you're being careful and not intentionally positioning the port area under the steady stream of water you'll be fine. this might sound weird but i'll stand backwards in the shower to wash my hair--so i'll face the wall where the faucet/shower head are and then just tilt my head back slightly into the shower spray to wash my hair--that way it kind of mimics the same way the water comes out of the hand held shower head and significantly less water runs down over the port. i'm pretty short so that might not work for taller people...
