well, it has to be moved. i can feel the the port fine but my nurse was clueless as to where it was despite me pointing it out a million times. she put the needle in the wrong spot twice so i said "STOP! i will just get it moved". it absolutely kills, she was so rough with it. she was digging her fingers into my boob so deep and just jabbing that damn needle anywhere. grrr.

Thats awful Kylie, I hope you reported her. Do you have the same nurse every time? You shouldn't have to have the whole thing redone because SHE'S incompetent.

Kylie

Have you ever tried to place the needle yourself. It may sound difficult but with a some determination its not that hard as long as your port is in a suitable place for you to be able access it. It may sound like something you may not be willing to do now but it would beat having to get the port replaced if you managed to do it yourself.

I have placed the needle myself a few times and it is a little sorer than having someone else do it but there is the advantage that you have control over where it goes.

Hey Kylie-
I used to havethe same problem...my port is in my breast because I didn't want anyone to see it......AWESOME, now no one can see it...not eventhe people who are supposed to see it.

Have you ever tried to flush it yourself....I know where it is better than anyone else and I can stick it better than anyone else. I have been doing my flushes on all of my ports since the beginning.....no strange little hospital bugs to pick up from nurses and the like.

Just a thought..before you have it moved, ask the doc to put you under a floroscope and ask him to show you exactly where it is.....that's what I did and I have never looked back. I LOVE doing it myself.

Sorry to hear about that. I do my own flushes when I feel well or I'm at work. I have a nurse whos great and that I am thankful for. Is your port small? And where is it placed? My freind maggies is in the middle of her massive boobs and the needle falls out on her. Mine is the upper right part of my chest right up my collar bone and its huge. I wish you luck, talk to some one to see if you can change nurses. I'm anal about who touchs mine. I guess thats because "henry" and I have been together for 6 yrs and the one befor it was named "frank" I only had for 1 1/2 because I was too young to understand and say something when they werent handling it right. I wish you luck.

i havent placed the needle myself and i dont think i ever could. the skin is just too sensitive there. its no trouble getting it moved. the surgeon can use the same scar and all.

What a pain to have to go through this Kylie. I hope something works out soon so that you can manage this more easily yourself or that the nurse who is attending you is compassionate and competent.

I have never had a port myself but that sounded totally horrible ...
If it had of been me I'd probably have slugged her ...

I nearly punch them when they dig around finding the vien just to
take blood.

Hope you get thing straightened out with it soon ....

Sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time with you port in your chest. There are cream's that you can put on yours skin, over top of the area of you port that will freeze it to make you not fell the needle go in at all. I use to use it when I first had my port put in, and I didn't feel the needle go in at all. Maybe you could try use that so it would be less painful or if you wanted to try and flush it your self, you wouldn't have to think about the pain of the needle going in. Just an idea though.

You were just so happy and excited about getting your port put in up there by your boob, its a shame that you have to move it somewhere else so fast. What ever happen with your port, I hope it works out for you in the end.

Geez, okay, in my opinion, it sounds like it was the nurse having the problem. My port is down really low, more into my breast and I HAVE had a few nurses who had problems. Usually I just have a different nurse try. I mean, I even had my CF nurse teach my friend how to access my port, so I wont have to go to the hospital everytime I need it flushed while at college. She even hit it on the first try, not to mention shes freaked out by needles.
Its really your choice though, sometimes just moving it is the easier thing.

I agree that the nurse has the problem. Don't let her jab. I am a nurse that works the IV team sometimes. If I have any doubts about a port, then I do not attempt. Those things are precious to the people that have them and far be it from me to "jab" at it. I also offer numb it if they would like. The numbing stings just a little but it is alot better than the needle. I also do not take offense it a patient prefers a certain nurse to do it. I respect their wishes. Your port may need to be replaced or fixed too. But I would talk to your doc about that, especially if several nurses are having trouble. Good luck!

Kylie, so sorry you are having such a tough time with that damn port..personally I think I would have bitten the nurse! At least when they move it, hopefully it will be at a very nice area to access. I used to do alot of oncology nursing and had to access alot of ports in just about every area imaginable...Some surgeons had them put in so deep you had to use the 1 1/2" needles! I hated that because I knew it would hurt the patient so I put Emla cream on the area, let it numb the area a bit and in one swift movement (hopefully) I would get it in...at least for the most part that is the way it went. I am thinking of you...I too am having issues with my port again, clotted this time and won't flush, so I hope the draino works again (went through this last month) IF not, another port needs to go in. Joy...Many hugs to you, Jenn <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
