port issuses

I am in the hospital. been here since tuesday the 3rd. got my needled in my port and started my iv meds. immedately the swelling begin. the needle was to short. the nurses said that it could have come out due to all my extremecoughing which i find very unlikely because i had the port since october 2009. the needle never came out due to all my coughing before. the neeedle came out and a regular iv went in. the meds wasnt going into my veins but my tissue.
the swelling went down to where they could try the port again. they got the needle in and during the second iv again.
i just got my port flushed two weeks ago and it worked fine.i wonder if anyone had this swelling before. what cause the swelling? the needle in wrong place? the nurse? or bad port?
i am in the hospital now and need to know if i need to wait until the swelling goes down completely before trying a third timeor if i need a new port?

The first time a nurse accessed my port, she put the needle in, and left. When I went to infuse my meds, I got swelling and burning. Turns out she had missed my port all together, and the needle wasn't in, it was just in my fleshy area. Could this have happened? At the time I had just gotten the port the week before, and didn't know anything about it to know if anything was wrong when she put it in.

I am going through similar issues with my port now...I was admitted inpatient the same day as you! Anyhow, a problem that I am experiencing regarding my port is blistering from excessive sweating (from fevers) as well as the wing tip rubbing. I also have some swelling. The docs are resting my port so that everything will calm down and heal before accessing it again. So far, it has been peripheral IV's for me, sucks because they don't last more than a day before they blow.
I imagine that they got cultures off of your port, if it comes out positive then it may need to come out. Otherwise, it is considered a skin problem. You should let it heal completely before accessing again though, just my 2 cents worth. If you have a bit of a skin infection it could travel to the port if you put the needle back in too soon....that's what my ID doc said to me.

Hope this helps, Jenn 40 wCF

I'm glad to see some of you also have issues with your ports (thought mine was just very badly done). My dd doesnt have a port anymore as she hasnt needed IV's for years.
When they offered me the option of having a port for my Chemotherapy I gladly accepted, knowing how much better it was for my dd, but everytime I have Chemo. I either get terrible pains in my shoulder about a day later, but when I query this, the Dr insists its still in place and the pains are just "reffered".

I had a hematoma once from a bad access. I doubt that your needle would come out due to coughing since you need to do a nice little tug to get it out. but maybe im wrong about that. I would let it calm down completely before re accessing it again . How much longer for IV's ? May they could do a picc in the meantime.. Hope all gets better <3

thanks for answering! they are going to test the port just to be sure! i will make sure to let it compltley heal before another retry. i am now a little surprised and upest they tried again with some swelling. i should have known better but so should the nurse that stuck me with a little swelling. aroupnd my port. oh well.
Bele Ache, i usually have 3 weeks of iv meds. i have a regular iv now. i may ask about a picc line but the last two or three times they took 2 hours to find a good vein and took two or three tries. so i am hesitiate on that.
