Certainly the usage that you are asking about is the very reason we get ports. Ports are easy to maintain but you also have to use the correct amount of saline and heparin(not to mention the right size syringes) I am assuming that the nurse is coming to access your port for you? If you are going to have someone else access it for you then they need to be trained to use aseptic tecnique. The last thing you need is an infected port. The procedure itself is easy but vital to your ports "health". Hope you start feeling better.
