Port Questions and Memory Loss

I just got out of the hospital a few weeks ago and I'm already sick again. My doctor mentioned a port. For those who have a port, can you tell me about it? Does it hurt? Is it better than an IV? Does it get in the way?

Second problem, I have horrible memory. Mom says it might have to do with all the times I've been put to sleep. Do any of you have horrible memory? It's kind of like short term memory loss.

Anyway, I'm really scared about getting a port. I don't have any friends that have one so it's not like I can ask them.
I never thought about it really unit right now, but I do have some what is seemingly short term memory loss. My memory has gotten progressively worse in the last 3 years I'd say, which oddly enough in the last 3 years i have had significantly less hospitalizations. However I don't think it has anything to do with being put to sleep but more of a nutritional status thing possibly. I could be wrong. At the same time Versed is meant to help you forget so I'm not sure. Interesting question.

Cojean62,
I have had a port since I've been 8 and I'm now 23. After the surgery it does hurt for a while but it goes away. Ports have to be flushed once a month with saline and heprine. Make sure for the first 6months or so you put emla numing cream on the sight about a hour before you flush it. Don't worry everything will be fine! It is a lot better then getting poked a dozen times trying to get a pic line in. They get it the first time every time! I love mine! The only thing you'll have to watch for is the port clotting up. If you get blood clots easily you might want to talk to your doctor a baby aspirin. You will be a lot happier once you get a port. Everyone I know has one and we all love them! Good luck!!

The ONLY PICC that ever had to be attempted twice was the FIRST one I ever had. Go figure. On the other hand Native American Indians have good veins... so I think this may have something to do with it.

I cannot tell you about memory loss, but the port is the best invention since sliced bread! This summer I've had IV treatment for full 7 weeks, and it's such a comfort to have free hands and not have to worry about "where to find a vein". Besides, once the wound is healed, it's completely pain-free. Go for it!

I've had four different ports, in four different areas of my chest, and the main problem I had was where the port was located. My first port I received, when I was 9, was eight inches below my collarbone. At the time, I hadnt hit puberty yet, and they thought I wouldn't for awhile. I did that year. I had that one in for about, 4 years before my breast has caused it to move drastically to where I couldn't access it right. The two ports after that, lasted from 2 years to 5 years. Both of those, had basically clogged with blood and TPA wouldn't work to get them to work again. And my fourth one I had placed in was done a week ago yesterday on the 22nd. The pain has gone away from the surgery, just be careful not to bump into anything with it. It hurts a lot. And yes, use emla! I've been using emla cream since I was little (I hate pain from needles), and it works amazing on the port! You don't feel it at all as long as you leave it on long enough

somewhere I read or was told (I don't remember) that with cf, when o2 sats drop even slightly your memory can be effected. It seems to be consistant with what I do and don't remember though, the sicker I was the less I remember about whatever event. I also don't usually remember telling people things or details about stuff. I have plenty of those moments where "I know I told someone I would do something or help with something today but I don't remember who or what" until they call asking where I am then its "oh yeah..." but I don't know that that is cf related
