Not to worry--it's not too bad and is definitely a decision I would make the same way again. PICC lines were a problem for me also, so having a port has been a huge relief.
They put me out when they started and then apparently numbed everything really well. I woke up for a while in the middle but didn't feel any pain. After a bit, someone pulled off the towel or whatever was covering my face, said, "Oh, she's pretty awake under here," and next thing I knew I was out again until the recovery room.
Personally, I had to take a few days off for the placement. The muscle pain was worse than the pain from the incision, and the pain meds knocked me out. It was either take pain meds or go to work, so I stayed home for a few days. It took a while (a few weeks probably) before there was no pain regardless of how I slept, etc., but it wasn't anything major after the first few days.
I think you'll be happy with your decision--hope it all goes well for you.
By the way, there are a number of threads about this, so you can probably find a lot of helpful information if you do a search.
